The SnowEx20 Boise River Basin SnowMicroPen (SMP) Raw Penetration Force Profiles, Version 1 (SNEX20_BR_BSU_SMP) data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains raw penetration force profiles from the SnowEx 2020 time series campaign in the Boise River Basin in Idaho. Temporal coverage spans from 18 December 2019 to 24 January 2020.
Due to planned maintenance aboard the SMAP spacecraft today September 14, 2023 data loss and latency impact are expected while the instrument is in safe-mode. Operations are estimated to resume as normal by tomorrow September 15, 2023. We apologize for any inconvenience.
The SMAPVEX19-22 Millbrook Airborne Lidar and SMAPVEX19-22 Massachusetts Airborne Lidar, Version 1 data sets, are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). These lidar measurements were collected in April and August 2022 in the vicinity of Millbrook, NY, and Petersham, MA during the SMAPVEX19-22 campaign.
The High Mountain Asia 5 Arc-Minute Hydrological Flow Direction for the Headwaters of the Amu Darya and Indus River Basins, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains hydrological flow directions at 5 arc-minute resolution for the headwaters of the Amu Darya and Indus River basins. The domain spans parts of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan.
The Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid 2.0 Weekly Snow Cover and Sea Ice Extent, Version 4 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated through 1 January 2023. This data set contains snow cover and sea ice extent derived from SMMR and DMSP-F8, -F11, -F13, and -F17 SMM/I and SSMIS brightness temperature measurements. These data are provided on the 25 km Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid 2.0.
The SMAP Radiometer Twice-Daily rSIR-Enhanced EASE-Grid 2.0 Brightness Temperatures, Version 2 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated to include new data from 1 May 2021 to 31 December 2022. This data set contains twice-daily, enhanced-resolution brightness temperature data derived from the SMAP radiometer.

The High Mountain Asia CMIP6 Monthly and Yearly Water Balance Projections, 2016-2099 for Parts of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC).
The MEaSUREs Polar EASE-Grid 2.0 Daily 6 km Land Freeze/Thaw Status from AMSR-E and AMSR2, Version 2 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated through 31 December 2021. The daily GeoTIFF files from 2002 to 2020 have been replaced. Although the data in these files has not been modified, the file metadata has been updated to comply with a new standard for all daily GeoTIFF files, starting with the 2021 temporal coverage extension.
On 7 July 2023 the FOT (Flight Operation Team) transitioned fully to LOOps (Light-Out-Operations) following successful testing and Ops Readiness Review. Estimated data acquisitions are expected to remain above the mission data capture guideline of 95%. Beginning 7 July 2023 onward, all Terra, Aqua, and combined Terra+Aqua MODIS Version 6.1 data products will be directly impacted by these occurrences of non-recoverable data loss.
The Snow Melt Onset Over Arctic Sea Ice from SMMR and SSM/I-SSMIS Brightness Temperatures Version 5 data set, available through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated to include data through 2022.
All Terra- and Aqua-MODIS forward-processing was resumed on July 31, 2023, and the SNPP- and JPSS1-VIIRS forward-processing was resume on August 1, 2023. NSIDC is currently working to ingest the backlog of MODIS and VIIRS data, which may take several days. Users should expect a permanent data gap in the SNPP VIIRS data sets for the period ~2:03:33 UTC on Jul 26, 2023 through ~16:50 UTC July 27.
The MODIS Version 6 (Collection 6) snow cover and sea ice data sets, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will be retired on 22 August 2023. After this date, the NSIDC DAAC will cease distribution of all Terra MODIS and Aqua MODIS Version 6.0 (Collection 6.0) snow cover and sea ice data sets. Documentation will remain available for future reference. The NSIDC strongly encourages users to switch to the newer MODIS Version 6.1 (Collection 6.1) data.
On July 26, 2023, at approximately 01:56 UTC, the SNPP spacecraft and all onboard instruments (including VIIRS) entered safe mode, pausing data collection. The SNPP VIIRS instrument was returned to operational mode at approximately 16:50 UTC on July 27, 2023. There will be a gap in temporal coverage during the period the instrument was in safe mode, between approximately 01:56 UTC Jul 26, 2023 through 16:50 UTC July 27, 2023. The products generated during the period after recovery from spacecraft anomaly may be reprocessed using the new LUT if it is deemed necessary.
The DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures, Version 6 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated through 5 July 2023. This data set provides daily gridded brightness temperatures derived from passive microwave sensors and distributed in a polar stereographic projection.
The MEaSUREs Greenland 6 and 12 day Ice Sheet Velocity Mosaics from SAR, Version 2 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated. The velocity mosaics data now cover the period from 1 January 2015 to 24 May 2023.
