The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will add 4 IceBridge data sets to NASA Earthdata Cloud on 14 August 2025, completing the migration of all IceBridge collections to the cloud platform. Earthdata Cloud is NASA’s archive of Earth observations, hosted in Amazon Web Services (AWS). While these data sets will continue to be available via their current URLs and workflows, these legacy access methods will be retired soon.

The AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L2B Half-Orbit 25 km EASE-Grid Surface Soil Moisture, Version 1 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated. This update includes the addition of the AMSR-E derived data, with temporal coverage of the data set now spanning June 2002 - present (with a gap in data from October 2011 - July 2012, between the end of the AMSR-E mission and the beginning of AMSR2).

IceBridge UAF L2 HF Bed Elevation and Ice Thickness, Version 1 and IceBridge ARES L2 Bed Elevation and Ice Thickness, Version 1 are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). These data sets contain glacier surface elevation, bed elevation, and ice thickness measurements for Alaska and Northwestern Canada.

ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2 L4 Monthly Arctic Snow Depth and Sea Ice Thickness, Version 1 is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains monthly estimates of Arctic sea ice, snow depth, and ice thickness using combined ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2 freeboard measurements.

The Near Real-time SMAP L1B Radiometer Half-Orbit Time-Ordered Brightness Temperatures, Version 105, and Near Real-time SMAP L2 Radiometer Half-Orbit 36 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 107 data sets, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been experiencing a data outage since 11 August 2025.

Access to ICESat/GLAS data sets in the legacy, on-premises archive at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will be retired on 11 September 2025. The NASA Earthdata Cloud is now the primary data archive for ICESat/GLAS data. If you currently access data through the legacy, on-premises archive, including through the HTTPS File System or Earthdata Search Stage for Delivery (ECHO Orders), please update your data access workflows and scripts to use the Earthdata Cloud archive.

Access to IceBridge data sets and data sets related to ICESat-2, ICESat/GLAS and IceBridge in the legacy, on-premises archive at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will be retired on 11 September 2025. The NASA Earthdata Cloud is now the primary data archive for these data.

The Near Real-time SMAP L1B Radiometer Half-Orbit Time-Ordered Brightness Temperatures, Version 105, and the Near Real-time SMAP L2 Radiometer Half-Orbit 36 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 107, are now available in the NASA Earthdata Cloud from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). Earthdata Cloud, NASA’s archive of Earth observations, is hosted in Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The SnowEx23 Mar23 IOP Snow Depth Profiles, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). The data set contains snow depth profiles measured as part of the NASA SnowEx 2023 March 2023 Intensive Observation Period. Ground-based snow depth profile measurements were taken in the vicinity of 170 snow pits distributed across five study areas in Northern Alaska. Temporal coverage spans from 07 March to 16 March 2023.

The Near-Real-Time AMSR2 EASE-Grid Daily Global Ice Concentration and Snow Extent, Version 1, (NISE_A2) is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). NISE_A2 is intended to be the replacement data set for Near-Real-Time SSM/I-SSMIS EASE-Grid Daily Global Ice Concentration and Snow Extent, Version 5 (NISE). This data set contains the same fields as the NISE product, with AMSR2 input data replacing SSMIS.

Access to SMAP data sets in the legacy, on-premises archive at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will be retired on 28 October 2025. The NASA Earthdata Cloud is now the primary data archive for SMAP data. If you currently access data through the legacy, on-premises archive, including through the HTTPS File System, Earthdata Search Stage for Delivery (ECHO Orders), or Customize (ESI) in Earthdata Search or the EGI API, please update your data access workflows and scripts to use the Earthdata Cloud archive.

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) learned that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) will continue processing and delivery of data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) instrument through the retirement of the DMSP mission, which is expected in September 2026. Versions 7 of ATLAS/ICESat-2 L1B Converted Telemetry Data (ATL02) and ATLAS/ICESat-2 L2A Global Geolocated Photon Data (ATL03) are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). ATL03 contains height above the WGS 84 ellipsoid, latitude, longitude, and time for each photon downlinked by the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) instrument on board ICESat-2.

The Near Real-Time MODIS/Terra L3 Global Daily 500m SIN Grid Snow Cover, Grain Size, and Dust Radiative Forcing, Version 1 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated. Spatial coverage has been expanded to include 6 new tiles over the Andes mountains in Chile, South America.

The VIIRS/NPP Snow Cover Daily L3 Global 375m CMG, Version 2 and VIIRS/JPSS1 Snow Cover Daily L3 Global 375m CMG, Version 2 data sets are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). These data sets provide a daily global view of cloud-gap-filled  snow cover at 375 m resolution.

Version 2 of MEaSUREs ITS_LIVE Regional Glacier and Ice Sheet Surface Velocities is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This new version contains mean annual surface velocities (1984–2022), plus climatological mean velocities (2014–2022), for 16 glacier-covered regions.

ICESat-2 Derived Canopy Height Model, Version 1 is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set provides a regression-based canopy height model of the contiguous United States (CONUS) using data from ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3A Land and Vegetation Height (ATL08), as well as data from Landsat, LANDFIRE, and NASADEM. The temporal coverage of input data is from 1 Jan 2019 to 31 Dec 2021.

The SnowEx21 Time Series Snow Depth Measurements, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). The data set contains manual snow depth measurements collected as part of the NASA SnowEx 2021 Time Series campaign. Data were collected at five study sites: Cameron Pass, Fraser Experimental Forest, and Senator Beck, Colorado; Boise River Basin, Idaho; and the Central Agriculture Research Center (CARC), Montana.

Access to High Mountain Asia data sets in the legacy, on-premises archive at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will be retired on 19 August 2025. The NASA Earthdata Cloud is now the primary data archive for HMA data. If you currently access data through the legacy, on-premises archive, including through the HTTPS File System or through the Earthdata Search Stage for Delivery (ECHO Orders) option, please update your data access workflows and scripts to use the Earthdata Cloud archive.
