User notice: VIIRS snow cover data at NSIDC DAAC
Multiple VIIRS snow cover data sets, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been reprocessed due to an error in the planetary ephemeris data. This resulted in the use of incorrect solar and lunar vectors for the period 16 Jan. 2020 00:00:00 – 17 Jan 2020 10:00:00. The affected files were reprocessed and redelivered on 6 March 2020.

New data set release: VIIRS/NPP CGF Snow Cover Daily L3 Global 375m SIN Grid
The VIIRS/NPP CGF Snow Cover Daily L3 Global 375m SIN Grid, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set utilizes a cloud-gap-filled algorithm to replace cloud-covered pixels with cloud-free pixels for the purpose of estimating the snow cover that may exist under current cloud cover. The data are provided daily and mapped to a 375 m sinusoidal grid.

New data set release: VIIRS/NPP Snow Cover Daily L3 Global 375m SIN Grid
The VIIRS/NPP Snow Cover Daily L3 Global 375m SIN Grid, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains daily snow cover derived from radiance data acquired by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite. Snow cover is identified using the Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI). These data are provided as gridded composites, projected to a 375 m Sinusoidal grid, and updated daily from 19 January 2012 to present.

VIIRS Snow and Sea Ice data Customization
VIIRS swath data customization options are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). VIIRS 6-minute swath (VNP10, VNP29, & VNP30) datasets use algorithms specifically designed to be compatible with MODIS Terra and Aqua Version 6 datasets. In addition, data customization options for VIIRS are similar to MODIS and include subsetting, reformatting, and reprojection. These options are provided by NASA Earthdata Search or can also be accessed programmatically.
VIIRS sea ice cover swath data now available
Version 1 of the VIIRS/NPP Sea Ice Cover 6-Min L2 Swath 375 m (VNP29) data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC).
The VIIRS sea ice cover algorithm has been specifically designed to be compatible with MODIS Terra and Aqua Version 6 sea ice data sets, to ensure continuity between the products and facilitate a climate-data record from the three sensors.
This data set is currently being generated by our data provider and delivered to NSIDC as the files are produced. As such, data will only be available for limited date ranges until processing has been completed. When finished, the temporal coverage will span 1 January 2012 to present.
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite, or VIIRS, flies on board the NASA Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite and acquires visible and infrared imagery and radiometric measurements of the land, atmosphere, cryosphere, and oceans.

VIIRS sea ice surface temperature swath data now available
Version 1 of the VIIRS/NPP Ice Surface Temperature 6-Min L2 Swath 750m (VNP30) data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC).
The VIIRS ice surface temperature algorithm has been specifically designed to be compatible with MODIS Terra and Aqua Version 6 sea ice data sets, to ensure continuity between the products and facilitate a climate-data record from the three sensors.
This data set is currently being generated by our data provider and delivered to NSIDC as the files become available. As such, data are available for limited dates in 2016 and 2017. Once processing is complete, the temporal coverage will span 1 January 2012 to present.
