NSIDC is pleased to announce that the DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures data set has been updated to include data through 31 December 2013.

The NSIDC DAAC is pleased to announce that the DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Pathfinder Daily EASE-Grid Brightness Temperatures data set has been updated to include data through 31 December 2013.

Beginning 10 Feb. 2014, Version 2 AMSR-E/Aqua L2A Global Swath Spatially-Resampled Brightness Temperatures will no longer be available from NSIDC. Version 3 of the AMSR-E/Aqua L2A Global Swath Spatially-Resampled Brightness Temperatures data set, which uses the most up-to-date algorithm, will remain available.

This new data set of image and shapefiles provides estimates of Arctic sea ice extent and concentration from 1901 to 1956 created from a collection of historic, hand-drawn sea ice charts from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). The original DMI charts are based on compiled observations of ice conditions reported by a variable network of national organizations, shore-based observers, scientific expeditions, and ships.

Notice to Users of AMSR-E, ICESat/GLAS, IceBridge, MODIS and NISE Data. The FTP location for accessing AMSR-E, ICESat/GLAS, IceBridge, MODIS, and NISE data changed in October from n4ftl01u.ecs.nasa.gov to n5eil01u.ecs.nsidc.org. Redirects that were previously put in place for users connecting to n4ftl01u.ecs.nasa.gov were removed. Users connecting to our FTP through a script or through an FTP download program should change the host name to n5eil01u.ecs.nasa.gov in order to continue retrieving data.

Some of the most beautiful natural features on Earth -- glaciers -- are changing right before our eyes. Many glaciers look remarkably different today than they did even 100 years ago. For those of you interested in monitoring these changes, wouldn’t it be nifty to have photographs of the same glacier, taken from the same vantage point and at the same time of year, but taken many years apart? Well, we’ve got a whole collection of them, featuring 45 sets of repeat photographs of glaciers taken from 1880 to 2009 in the USA, Peru, and Australia.

New browse images are now available for download for the North and South Polar projections of the Nimbus High Resolution Infrared Radiometer Remapped Digital Data Daily L3, HDF5 (NmHRIR3H) data set. The relative size of the continent outlines has been corrected in these images.

USGS glaciologist Bruce Molnia is a science advisor and contributor to the Roger G. Barry Archives and Resource Center (ARC) at NSIDC Glacier Photograph Collection. On Friday, 29 November, he was interviewed by The Weather Channel and spoke to the importance of photographs for conveying information about changing climate. Dr. Molnia used the historic Glacier Photograph Collection at ARC for some of his research.

NASA IceBridge WISE L2 Ice Thickness and Surface Elevation data for 2013 Alaska are now available from NSIDC. This data set contains depth sounder measurements of elevation, surface, bottom, and thickness for Alaska taken from the Warm Ice Sounding Explorer (WISE). This climate data record (CDR) is a collection of observations from 1947 to 2012 of Arctic sea-ice draft, freeboard, and thickness. Existing observations of sea-ice thickness span a variety of methods, accuracies, and temporal and spatial scales and are archived in a variety of different locations and in different formats.

How do I differentiate between sea ice data sets? Which ones have file formats that are easy for me to use? How many ice velocity data sets are offered at NSIDC? What are my options for downloading the data? NSIDC has been busily working to develop a Web tool to answer these questions and more. The new Scientific Data Search aims to help you discover the data sets most useful to you. This new tool replaces the previous NSIDC data set search tool. It is recommended for those who would like to explore the breadth of NSIDC's data holdings.

NSIDC is pleased to announce that the Polar Pathfinder Daily 25 km EASE-Grid Sea Ice Motion Vectors data set has been updated to Version 2. Version 2 includes updated data through 31 December 2012 for both hemispheres.
