MODIS Swath, 500 m Gridded Snow Cover Data Now Available in Version 6

Four Version 6 MODIS snow cover data sets are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC):

In Version 6, Fractional Snow Cover has been replaced by Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) snow cover. Binary Snow-Covered Area has been discontinued. Version 6 also incorporates a Quantitative Image Restoration technique that restores Aqua MODIS band 6 data to scientific quality. Thus the snow detection algorithms are now the same for Aqua and Terra. Additional changes are described in the Version Summary on each data set’s Web page.

The entire time series for these data sets is being reprocessed to Version 6 by the data provider, MODIS Adaptive Processing System (MODAPS). Users should expect limited temporal coverage while reprocessing is ongoing. For additional details, see MODIS | V6 Reprocessing Plan

NSIDC will continue to distribute both Version 5 and Version 6 of the MODIS/Terra and MODIS/Aqua snow cover data sets until reprocessing is complete. To access these data, see MODIS Data Summaries.

New Data added to MEaSUREs Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC) Daily Snow Depth Analysis Data

The MEaSUREs Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC) Daily Snow Depth Analysis Data data set at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has been updated with snow depth analysis data for 2015.

These data are generated through a grant from the NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program.

New Data added to MEaSUREs Greenland Ice Velocity: Selected Glacier Site Velocity Maps from InSAR

The MEaSUREs Greenland Ice Velocity: Selected Glacier Site Velocity Maps from InSAR data set at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has been updated with velocity maps for 2013 and 2014. In addition, this update replaces all data for the Jakobshavn Isbrae, Helheim, and Kangerdlugssuaq glaciers with new maps that offer improved temporal sampling and address previous artifacts related to slope discontinuities at these glaciers’ terminii.

These data are generated through a grant from the NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program.

MEaSUREs Greenland Ice Sheet Velocity Map from InSAR Data, Version 2 Released

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has released Version 2 of MEaSUREs Greenland Ice Sheet Velocity Map from InSAR Data. This update offers users a new winter velocity map for 2009/2010 plus processing enhancements that include:

  • Additional quality control screening to remove bad data points;
  • Improved baseline fits that enhance consistency in the interior;
  • Updated error estimates that better represent the average behavior of the data;
  • The addition of ALOS fine-beam data to improve coverage

MODIS Mosaic of Greenland 2005 Now Available

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce a new data set, the MEaSUREs MODIS Mosaic of Greenland 2005 (MOG2005) Image Map. This data set consists of two digital image maps for Greenland that show surface morphology and snow grain size. The image maps are constructed from MODIS imagery acquired during 2005 and provide nearly cloud-free views of all land areas and islands larger than a few hundred meters, including the ice caps on Baffin Island, Devon Island, Axel Heiberg Island, and Ellesmere Island.

Greenland Ice Mapping Project Digital Elevation Model Now Available

The Greenland Ice Mapping Project (GIMP) Digital Elevation Model is now available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set, funded by NASA’s Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, consists of an enhanced resolution digital elevation model (DEM) for the Greenland Ice Sheet. The DEM was constructed by combining ASTER and SPOT 5 DEMs over the ice sheet periphery and margin with AVHRR photoclinometry for the interior and far north, and calibrating the data to mean elevations obtained by the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) that flew on the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation (ICESat) satellite.

MODIS Version 6 Sea Ice Reprocessing Complete

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that Version 6 (Collection 6) reprocessing is complete for our MODIS sea ice data sets. Forward–processing will continue for both Version 5 and Version 6 for approximately one year, after which Version 5 forward-processing will be discontinued. MEaSUREs Releases Annual Greenland Outlet Glacier Terminus Positions from SAR Mosaics

The Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), is pleased to announce the release of a new data set.  MEaSUREs Annual Greenland Outlet Glacier Terminus Positions from SAR Mosaics provides glacier terminus positions in individual shapefiles for winter 2000–2001, annually during winters 2005–2006 to 2008–2009, and winter 2012–2013.

MEaSUREs Releases New High-Resolution Greenland SAR Mosaics

The Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), is pleased to announce the release of a new data set.

MEaSUREs Greenland Ice Sheet Mosaics from SAR Data consists of the following high-resolution mosaics derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR): uncalibrated and sigma naught calibrated C-band mosaics from RADARSAT-1 for the winters of 2000–2001, 2005–2006 through 2008–2009, and 2012–2013; and uncalibrated ALOS Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) mosaics for the winter of 2009–2010. In addition, a RADARSAT-1 multiyear composite is available for 2000-2009. All mosaics are provided at both 100 m and 20 m resolutions.

Six MEaSUREs Data Sets Re-released with New Coordinate Variables

The Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), is pleased to announce that six of its data sets can now be readily geolocated by popular geospatial software packages such as GDAL and Panoply. NSIDC DAAC Releases Version 6 MODIS Sea Ice Data

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that users can now obtain Version 6 (Collection 6) MODIS sea ice data.

The MODIS Version 6 sea ice extent and ice surface temperature algorithms and products are the same as Version 5; however, Version 6 updates to algorithm inputs—in particular, the L1B calibrated radiances, land and water mask, and cloud mask products—have improved the sea ice outputs. The Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), is pleased to announce the release of a new data set: MEaSUREs Northern Hemisphere Terrestrial Snow Cover Extent Weekly 100km EASE-Grid 2.0. This data set offers users weekly 100 km snow cover maps for the Northern Hemisphere, derived from the NOAA/NCDC Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover Extent Climate Data Record and satellite passive microwave brightness temperatures.

New InSAR Ice Velocity Data for Antarctica

The MEaSUREs InSAR-Based Ice Velocity of the Amundsen Sea Embayment, Antarctica data set is now available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set, part of the NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, consists of high-resolution, digital mosaics of ice motion in the Amundsen Sea Embayment and West Antarctica, including Pine Island, Thwaites, Haynes, Pope, Smith, and Kohler glaciers. The mosaics were assembled from interferometric synthetic-aperture radar (InSAR) data acquired in 1996, 2000, 2002, and 2006-2012 by various satellites.

New Greenland Surface Melt Data from NASA MEaSUREs

The MEaSUREs Greenland Surface Melt Daily 25km EASE-Grid 2.0 data set is now available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set, part of the NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) program, offers users a 25 km daily record of surface/near-surface melting on the Greenland Ice Sheet from 2 January 1979 to 31 December 2012.

Reprocessed MODIS Data Now Available

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has been informed that our data provider, MODAPS, identified corrupt files that may have impacted previously forward processed data for all MODIS snow and sea ice products. NSIDC recommends that MODIS snow and sea ice data users replace the following files:

MODIS Terra
Files from Day of Year (DOY) 256 to DOY 271, downloaded before 6 October 2014.
Files from DOY 277 to 282, downloaded before 11 October 2014.

MODIS Aqua
Files for DOY 271, downloaded before 6 October 2014.
Files from DOY 277 to 280, downloaded before 11 October 2014.

To obtain the reprocessed data, simply re-download the affected files from NSIDC. A listing of MODIS data products can be found at:

The FTP location for accessing AMSR-E, GLAS, IceBridge, MODIS, and NISE data changed in October from n4ftl01u.ecs.nasa.gov to n5eil01u.ecs.nsidc.org. Redirects that were previously put in place for users connecting to n4ftl01u.ecs.nasa.gov were removed. Users connecting to our FTP through a script or through an FTP download program should change the host name to n5eil01u.ecs.nasa.gov in order to continue retrieving data. Please contact NSIDC User Services with any questions.

Power Outage at Goddard Causes MODIS Data Loss
