Access to Passive Microwave data sets in the legacy, on-premises archive at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) will be retired on 15 January 2026. The NASA Earthdata Cloud is now the primary data archive for Passive Microwave data. If you currently access data through the legacy, on-premises archive, including through the HTTPS File System, Earthdata Search Stage for Delivery (ECHO Orders), or Customize (ESI) in Earthdata Search or the EGI API, please update your data access workflows and scripts to use the Earthdata Cloud archive. All NSIDC DAAC data, including Passive Microwave data sets, in NASA Earthdata Cloud can be accessed via HTTPS through https://cmr.earthdata.nasa.gov/search/site/collections/directory/NSIDC_CPRD/gov.nasa.eosdis
In addition to retiring the legacy data archive, NSIDC DAAC will end forward processing of SSMIS-based near-real-time data. As a result, these data sets will no longer be updated after 15 January 2026:
- Near-Real-Time DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures (NSIDC-0080)
- Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations (NSIDC-0081)
- Near-Real-Time SSM/I-SSMIS EASE-Grid Daily Global Ice Concentration and Snow Extent (NISE)
For the above products, users are encouraged to transition to the available AMSR2 alternatives:
- AMSR2 Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures, Version 2 (NSIDC-0802)
- AMSR2 Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations, Version 1 (NSIDC-0803)
- Near-Real-Time AMSR2 EASE-Grid Daily Global Ice Concentration and Snow Extent, Version 1 (NISE_A2)
These datasets with SSMIS inputs will continue to receive temporal updates for the foreseeable future:
