NSIDC and the Snow Today Team are pleased to announce that the Snow Today Daily Snow Viewer web application is displaying a new version of snow properties data and New Zealand has been added as a region. Currently, the new version of the data is only accessible for visualization through the web application but will be available for download soon. The new version is adapted to 1) account for changes in non-snow surfaces from year to year such as might occur with a fire or drought, 2) adds false positive detection such as from dry lake bed (playa) or clouds using elevation dependent detection, 3) modified our cloud persistence filter to increase performance of snow detection in near real-time 4) removed the baseline elevation mask of 500 m to allow snow detection at any elevation. These improvements will allow implementation for other cloudy regions with snow elevation reaching the sea-level. We plan to add US Alaska and Canadian British Columbia and Alberta in early 2026.
