Overview

The objective of the Antarctic Ice Sheet Velocity and Mapping Data is to produce continental-scale, multi-year, digital ice sheet velocity and mapping products of the Antarctic continent as Earth System Data Records (ESDRs) and distribute them to the research community. These ESDRs are produced using data collected by a variety of satellites and sensors, including the Canadian Space Agency's (CSA) RADARSAT-2, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Advanced Land Observing Satellite "DAICHI" (ALOS) and Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 "DAICHI-2" (ALOS-2) PALSAR-2, and the European Space Agency's (ESA) Copernicus Sentinel-1. In addition, historical data from the following satellites and sensors are used: CSA's RADARSAT-1, JAXA's ALOS PALSAR, ESA's Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) and European Remote Sensing satellites 1 and 2 (ERS-1 and -2), and the U.S. Geological Survey's/NASA's Landsat.

These products are generated using well-proven, extensively documented, peer-reviewed algorithms and numerical tools developed over the past twenty years representing state-of-the-art techniques in mapping ice sheet velocity from space. The results are independent of cloud cover and solar illumination, and offer a uniform, high-resolution sampling of the entire Antarctic continent. The acquired data cover multiple years from the early 1990s to present, and include high-resolution ice sheet-wide ice velocity mappings, grounding line mappings, ice shelf masks, basin boundaries, and ice shelf fronts. These products help document changes in ice sheet dynamics and boundaries, the rates of ice mass flow to the ocean and contribution to sea level rise, and the sensitivity of ice dynamics to climate forcing on decadal time scales.
