The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has learned that the Department of Defense (DoD) has extended processing and delivery of Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) data through 31 July 2025. See the Earthdata: Status Update on DMSP Data Products for further details.
This extension applies to the following NSIDC DAAC-produced data sets that rely on SSMIS data as input:
- Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I (NSIDC-0079)
- DMSP SSM/I Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures (NSIDC-0001)
- Near-Real-Time DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures (NSIDC-0080)
- Near-Real-Time DMSP SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations (NSIDC-0081)
- Near-Real-Time SSM/I-SSMIS EASE-Grid Daily Global Ice Concentration and Snow Extent (NISE)
- Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data (NSIDC-0051)
- Calibrated Enhanced-Resolution Passive Microwave Daily EASE-Grid 2.0 Brightness Temperature ESDR(NSIDC-0630) - After 31 July 2025, this data set will continue to update with data from the AMSR2 sensor
Thank you to those who shared how these data sets impact your work. We continue to evaluate alternative data sources, such as AMSR2, and will provide updates as they become available.
