Data Announcement

User Notice: DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Pathfinder Daily EASE-Grid Brightness Temperatures at NSIDC DAAC

Beginning in 2021, the MEaSUREs Calibrated Enhanced-Resolution Passive Microwave Daily EASE-Grid 2.0 Brightness Temperature ESDR, Version 1 (NSIDC-0630) data set, available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), will replace the DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Pathfinder Daily EASE-Grid Brightness Temperatures, Version 2 (NSIDC-0032) data set. NSIDC will continue quarterly processing of NSIDC-0032 through 31 December 2020, after which no new data will be available; the data set will be retired in 2021.

NSIDC-0630 is deemed a superior product to NSIDC-0032. It contains enhanced-resolution, gridded passive microwave data derived from the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR), Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I), Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS), and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - Earth Observing System (AMSRE) sensors. Data are available from 25 October 1978 through 01 January 2020, in three equal-area projections (Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, and Temperate), and at resolutions of 3.125 km, 6.25 km, 12.5 km, and 25 km. This data set is updated yearly.

NSIDC suggests that NSIDC-0032 users consider switching to NSIDC-0630 in the next few months. Some key differences between the two data sets are outlined here: What are the differences between NSIDC-0032 and NSIDC-0630? and in each data set’s respective user guide. For more questions about either data set or the decision to retire NSIDC-0032, please contact the User Services Office at nsidc@nsidc.org.
