Data set update: DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures

The DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures, Version 5 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated through 30 April 2020. These newest data derive from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) sensor aboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F18 satellite. DMSP F18 derived data now have a temporal coverage from 01 January 2017 through 30 April 2020. In addition, another year of data from the DMSP F17 satellite has also been published. DMPS F17 derived data now extend from 14 December 2006 through 01 January 2020.

This data set contains daily gridded brightness temperatures derived from passive microwave sensors and distributed in a polar stereographic projection. Brightness temperatures are derived from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) aboard the DMSP F8, F11, and F13 satellites and the SSMIS sensor aboard the DMSP F17 and F18 satellites. The channels used to calculate brightness temperatures include 19.3 GHz vertical and horizontal, 22.2 GHz vertical, 37.0 GHz vertical and horizontal, 85.5 GHz vertical and horizontal (on SSM/I), and 91.7 GHz vertical and horizontal (on SSMIS). Data acquired from the 85.5 and 91.7 channels are gridded at a resolution of 12.5 km; all other frequencies are provided at a resolution of 25 km.
