Overview

The Knowledge of the Caribou database compiles Traditional and Local Ecological Knowledge (TLEK) observations of caribou from existing reports and documents recorded at caribou workshops and herd-specific working group meetings. These observations provide an important local record of the past and present state of the Arctic environment and caribou, but participation and knowledge sharing in these meetings represents a significant time burden on local community members. The goal of this database is to alleviate repeated requests for information while compiling community-based observations of caribou ecology for posterity. The knowledge documented here is the property of the knowledge holders and Peoples who shared it. We acknowledge and defend the sovereignty and right of self-determination of all Indigenous Peoples.
