Mercator World Map, 1587
Based on the belief that landmasses in the Northern Hemisphere must be balanced by a massive continent in the Southern Hemisphere, generations of Europeans represented a hypothetical continent, Terra Australis, in world maps. Cartographer Rumold Mercator produced this map in 1587. When explorers reached Australia and Antarctica, they found very different landmasses than what some mapmakers had long imagined. — Credit: Wikipedia
