The data producer for Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data, Version 2 data set has stopped forward processing. The final temporal coverage for the data is 26 October 1978 to 31 December 2025. The data will remain available for download as a static product at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC).
As an alternative, the AMSR2 Daily Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations, Version 2 (NSIDC-0803) data product provides daily polar stereographic gridded daily brightness temperatures for both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This product provides sea ice concentration fields on 25km polar stereo grids, matching sea ice concentrations gridded from SMMR, SSM/I, and SSMIS sensors. An assessment of this sensor change on the long-term NSIDC passive microwave sea ice extent climate record is provided in the related documentation.
