Data Announcement

User notice: OpenAltimetry performance updates - Improved Map Interface and Data Rendering

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce performance improvements to the OpenAltimetry web application. These updates include:

  • Improved data location representation at low resolution zoom levels.
  • Faster UI performance while panning, zooming and switching dates.
  • Reduced latency when rendering high resolution data points (after dynamic caching, see note below).
  • Implementation of NASA Harmony services for ordering subsetted HDF5 files.

Note on dynamic caching of high resolution data: Initial views of an area of interest may load slowly the first time, but will render quickly on subsequent views, as the data are cached locally and no longer require repeated OPeNDAP queries.

A description of known issues can be found at https://nsidc.org/openaltimetry/known-issues-updates.

Future improvements include the transition of OpenAltimetry to ICESat-2 v007 data, which is expected to bring additional performance improvements through cloud optimization.
