NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce that the Sea Ice Index has been updated from near-real-time data to final data for the time period 01 January 2016 through 31 December 2017. Initially, when the Sea Ice Index is first processed, it uses a near-real-time (NRT) sea ice concentration product as it input. This NRT product can contain missing data and has less quality control procedures applied to it than the final sea ice concentration input product provided by NASA Goddard. However, the final input product often lags behind the present by approximately a year.
With over 1,100 data sets archived and distributed through the National Snow and Ice Data Center, it is expected that not all data sets and associated documentation are created equal. Some data are part of a larger, continuously-funded long-term mission producing global climate data records, while others are small-scale or one-time efforts targeted for initial satellite validation studies. This broad spectrum of data purposes, communities, and funding sources leads to varying levels of service (LoS) provided by NSIDC.

This data set, part of the Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, provides 6 and 12-day 50 m resolution image mosaics of the Greenland coastline and ice sheet periphery beginning in January 2015.
The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data, Version 1 data set has been updated through 31 December 2017. This data set provides a consistent time series of daily and monthly averaged sea ice concentrations beginning in October 1978.

The Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS dataset, distributed through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is now at Version 3.1. In the latest release, the sea ice concentration field derived from the Bootstrap algorithm uses an "open water" identifier that is calculated daily in May and October. In Version 3.0, this value was calculated using a single monthly value for May and a single monthly value for October.
