Web Policy

Web Policy

Thank you for visiting the National Snow and Ice Data Center's (NSIDC) Web site. The following is our policy on information that we track about visitors to our Web site, including the intent, maintenance, and possible uses of this information.

Information collected for tracking and customization (Cookies)

A cookie is a small file that a Web site transfers to your computer to allow it to remember specific information about your session while you are connected. Your computer will only share the information in the cookie with the Web site that provided it, and no other Web site can request it. There are two types of cookies, session and persistent. Session cookies last only as long as your Web browser is open. Once you close your browser, the cookie disappears. Persistent cookies store information on your computer for longer periods of time. This website automatically uses several types of cookies.

Google analytics

This website uses Google Analytics Premium. Please refer to the following policies on Google's website for more information:

We collect and temporarily store certain technical information about your visit for use in site management and security purposes. This information includes:

  1. The Internet domain from which you access our Web site (for example, "xcompany.com" if you use a private Internet access account, or "yourschool.edu" if you connect from an educational domain);
  2. The IP address (a unique number for each computer connected to the Internet) from which you access our Web site;
  3. The type of browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer) used to access our site;
  4. The operating system (Windows, Mac) used to access our site;
  5. The date and time you access our site;
  6. The URLs of the pages you visit;
  7. Your username, if it was used to log in to the Web site; and
  8. If you visited this NASA Web site from another Web site, the URL of the forwarding site.
  9. Anonymous summary demographic information about our visitors such as gender, age range, and areas of interest for adults over the age of 18. We do this by using Google Demographic and Interests reports. When you visit a website that has partnered with the Google Display Network, Google stores a number in your browser using a persistent cookie to remember your visits. This number uniquely identifies a web browser, not a specific person. Browsers may be associated with a demographic category, such as gender or age range, based on the sites that were visited. This demographic information is used to help us better understand our visitors' interests and needs to more effectively develop content to serve you.

This information is generally used to help us make our site more useful for you. With this data we learn about the number of visitors to our site and the types of technology our visitors use.

You can opt out of all Google Analytics tracking by installing a browser extension available for most major browsers.

Google analytics on the NSIDC website comply with the NASA Web Privacy Policy.

Zendesk

Zendesk cookies are used to track users across sessions to optimize user experience by  maintaining session consistency; and to identify trusted web traffic. When we collect this information, Zendesk only uses this data to provide services or in aggregate form, and not in a manner that would identify users  personally.

Hotjar by Contentsquare

Hotjar is a technology service that helps us better understand our users’ experience (e.g. how much time they spend on which pages, which links they choose to click, what users do and don’t like, etc.) and this enables us to build and maintain our service with user feedback. Hotjar uses cookies and other technologies to collect data on our users’ behavior and their devices. This includes a device's IP address (processed during your session and stored in a de-identified form), device screen size, device type (unique device identifiers), browser information, geographic location (country only), and the preferred language used to display our website. Hotjar stores this information on our behalf in a pseudonymized user profile. Hotjar is contractually forbidden to sell any of the data collected on our behalf.

For further details, please see the ‘Cookies set by Hotjar’ section of Hotjar’s support site.
