The 2018 winter sea ice maximum has passed, and the melt season has begun.
Roger G. Barry, founding director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), passed away on March 19, 2018, concluding a distinguished career in the study of the cryosphere and mountain climates.
Arctic sea ice appears to have reached its annual maximum extent on March 17. This is the second lowest Arctic maximum in the 39-year satellite record.
As temperatures at the North Pole approached the melting point at the end of February, Arctic sea ice extent tracked at record low levels for this time of year.
