Beginning on May 11, 2024, MODIS/Terra began experiencing geolocation errors. This affected the geolocation accuracy of the Terra data between May 11 and 12 (DOY 132-133), 2024. Terra L2s and dailies for these two days, as well as the 8 and 16-days products from DOY 129 will be reprocessed in the coming days.
Beginning late on May 25, 2024, SNPP VIIRS began experiencing geolocation errors, in excess of 1 km. These errors persisted through May 26 and May 27, 2024, at which point forward production of all SNPP VIIRS data sets was halted until further notice. Users are discouraged from using any SNPP VIIRS data produced on or after May 25, 2024. For more details, please visit: https://ladsweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/alerts-and-issues/140010.
NSCAT Daily SIR-Enhanced EASE-Grid 2.0 Radar Backscatter, Version 1 and SASS Daily SIR-Enhanced EASE-Grid 2.0 Radar Backscatter, Version 1 are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). These data sets are newly processed radar backscatter products from the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) and Seasat-A Scatterometer (SASS) instruments with the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction (SIR) or Drop-in-the-Bucket gridding (GRD) applied.
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 1 (Collection 1) s
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 1 (Collection 1) snow and sea ice data sets will cease forward processing on June 17, 2024. Although Version 1 data will remain available for download for several months, NSIDC strongly encourages users to transition to VIIRS Version 2 (Collection 2) prior to the 17th.
The IceBridge ARES L1B Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles, Version 1, and IceBridge UAF L1B HF Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles, Version 1 data sets, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been updated. Previously unavailable files have been added as a result of processing efforts by the Data Authors.
The GLIMS Glacier Database, Version 1 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated. This update includes new outlines for several glaciers in Alaska, Washington, Greenland, and New Zealand. Additionally, a number of glaciers in Washington and Wyoming are now classified as extinct.
The ATLAS/ICESat-2 L2A Global Geolocated Photon Data (ATL03), Version 6 data set, the ATLAS/ICESat-2 L2A Normalized Relative Backscatter Profiles (ATL04), Version 6 data set and the higher level products derived from ATL03 and ATL04, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been updated so entire data sets for Version 6 are now referenced to ITRF2014.
The SMAP Level 4 data sets, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), were reprocessed from 1 Nov 2023 through the present after an issue was discovered with the IMERG-Late precipitation input after the GPM orbit boost on 7-8 November 2023. The reprocessed data files have the SVID (science version ID) Vv7031 (the L4 SM products) and Vv7041 (the L4 carbon product) and now use the NOAA Climate Prediction Center "Unified" (CPCU) precipitation inputs instead of IMERG-Late precipitation inputs.
The MODIS/Terra Global Annual 0.01Deg CMG Snow Cover Climatology (NSIDC-0791), Version 1 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated from a Basic to a Standard Level of Service, which means more documentation and support options are now available. Please see our Level of Service article article for more information.
The Near Real-Time MODIS/Terra L3 Global Daily 500m SIN Grid Snow Cover, Grain Size, and Dust Radiative Forcing, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set represents an updated version of the MODIS Snow Covered Area and Grain-size (MODSCAG) and MODIS Dust Radiative Forcing in Snow (MODDRF) data sets previously produced by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
