Polar research
NOAA in the Arctic: Describes a wealth of NOAA activities, strategies, and data.
Global Ocean Monitoring and Observing’s Arctic Research Program: Sponsors sustained ocean observations, modeling, and marine ecosystem studies to characterize the Alaska and Arctic regions and the impacts of ongoing climate change in this region. Research focuses predominantly on the northern Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas.
Alaska Fisheries Science Center: Monitors the health and sustainability of fish, marine mammals, and their habitats across nearly 1.5 million square miles of water surrounding the state, which produces more than half of the fish caught in the United States, worth $1.8 billion.
Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL): Located in Seattle, WA, PMEL conducts oceanographic and atmospheric research. Polar activities are coordinated through a Coastal and Arctic Research Division and emphasize fisheries and large-scale circulation. PMEL is part of NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.
Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, & Ecosystem Studies (CICOES): Fosters research collaboration between NOAA and the University of Washington, University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Oregon State University, in investigations on climate, ocean chemistry, fisheries assessments, and tsunami forecasting. CICOES’ missions include engaging the citizenry of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska to increase understanding of natural and anthropogenic impacts on ecosystem health and socioeconomic sustainability.
Snow and ice analysis and forecasting
US National Ice Center (USNIC): Operated by the US Navy, NOAA, and the US Coast Guard, USNIC provides worldwide operational sea ice analyses and forecasts. USNIC products constitute an important resource for polar researchers and are archived at NSIDC. USNIC is affiliated with the NOAA/NESDIS Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution and the NOAA National Weather Service.
National Weather Service Environmental Monitoring Center: Weather, marine, and climate prediction modeling and analysis.

PolarWatch: Facilitates the discovery, accessibility, and utilization of satellite data products at high latitudes. Serves data and the means to visualize, subset, and reformat. Several NOAA@NSIDC data sets can be accessed through PolarWatch
Using Data Collected from the Arctic and Alaska: Includes a selection of data portals and visualization tools
NOAA Satellite and Information Service: Meets the Nation’s needs for access to global environmental data from satellites and other sources.
National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI): Provides long-term stewardship for and access to geophysical data.
