The Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) Glacier Database, Version 1 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated. This update includes new glacier outlines for several regions, including Scandinavia, Arctic Canada, Swiss Alps, the Andes, and the Himalayas. Additional changes include updating the status of several glaciers to “gone”, and correcting encoding errors for a number of glaciers so their names display properly. This data set is a comprehensive glacier inventory that provides information about the extent and rate of change of all the world's mountain glaciers and ice caps. It uses data from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument aboard the Terra satellite, the Landsat series of satellites, and historical observations. The data set is produced in coordination with the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) initiative and covers the period from 1 January 1850 to the present.
