The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that users can now obtain Version 6 (Collection 6) MODIS sea ice data.
The MODIS Version 6 sea ice extent and ice surface temperature algorithms and products are the same as Version 5; however, Version 6 updates to algorithm inputs—in particular, the L1B calibrated radiances, land and water mask, and cloud mask products—have improved the sea ice outputs. For information about forward and reprocessing schedules, see MODIS collection.
NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce the addition of almost 1200 photographs to the Glacier Photograph Collection. This collection was compiled by the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) who collect and disseminate standardized observations on glacier fluctuations such as length, area, volume, and mass. This special collection focuses on photographs of glaciers for which long fluctuation series are available, some of them dating back to the 18th century.
NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce that the Google Earth files for the minimum and maximum annual sea ice extents have been updated. The September 2014 minimum KMZ file has been updated to use final instead of near-real-time data, and the March 2015 maximum KMZ file has been added to the time series. To view these, and other, Google Earth files, visit the NSIDC Data on Google Earth web page.
Beginning in March 2015, processing at NSIDC for passive-microwave-based sea ice products was updated to use monthly masks based on the U.S. National Ice Center's long-term, 1972 to 2007, manual sea ice analyses to filter out likely false ice detections. These masks are now available from the NASA NSIDC DAAC as a stand-alone data set: Polar Stereographic Valid Ice Masks Derived from National Ice Center Monthly Sea Ice Climatologies.
The NASA IceBridge-related CryoSat-2 Sea Ice Freeboard, Thickness, and Snow Depth Quick Look evaluation product now includes data for the March 2015 time period, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set is an experimental sea ice thickness data set containing derived geophysical data products retrieved over the Arctic sea ice cover.
NASA IceBridge Sea Ice Freeboard, Snow Depth, and Thickness Quick Look evaluation product data for the 2015 time period are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set is an evaluation product containing derived geophysical data products retrieved over the Arctic sea ice cover from 2012 to 2015 using the IceBridge Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM), Snow Radar, Digital Mapping System (DMS), and KT19 pyrometer.
The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce the release of the Polar Stereographic Valid Ice Masks Derived from National Ice Center Monthly Sea Ice Climatologies data set. These valid ice masks provide a way to remove spurious ice caused by residual weather effects and land spillover in passive microwave data, and are derived from the National Ice Center Arctic Sea Ice Charts and Climatologies data.
IceBridge DMS L1B Geolocated and Orthorectified Images for 2014 Antarctica are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains Level-1B imagery taken from the Digital Mapping System (DMS) over Greenland and Antarctica. See the IceBridge DMS L1B landing page for more information.

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, the WAIS Divide WDC06A Oxygen Isotope Record. This data set contains complete low resolution (0.25 to 100 cm) oxygen isotope data from the WAIS Divide Ice Core WDC06A, 0 to 3404.7 m depth. Also included is the WDC2014 timescale.
The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) is pleased to announce that the Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS, Version 2 data set has been updated through 31 December 2014.
The NASA IceBridge LVIS POS/AV L1B Corrected Position and Attitude Data now include data for the Alaska 2014 Arctic Radiation - IceBridge Sea&Ice Experiment (ARISE) campaign. This data set contains georeferencing data from the Applanix 510 and 610 POS AV systems flown with the Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS) over Greenland, Antarctica, and Alaska.

To meet a need for greater accuracy and higher resolution in ice concentration fields that are used to initialize an operational sea ice forecast model, a new sea ice concentration product has been developed by NOAA@NSIDC. Known as MASAM2, this sea ice concentration is a blend of two other daily sea ice data products. First is ice coverage from MASIE, the Multisensor Analyzed Sea Ice Extent product, at a 4 km grid cell size. Second are ice concentrations from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) at a 10 km grid cell size.
