From the early 1960s through the mid 1980s, the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office and later the Naval Research Laboratory conducted approximately nine missions per year over arctic sea ice in order to improve techniques for ice observation, refine forecasting techniques, collect data for military Arctic operations, and support U.S. Navy submarines during under-ice operations. Aerial photography from these flights was preserved on film.
NASA IceBridge MCoRDS L1B Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles, Version 2 data for 2012 Antarctica and 2013 Arctic are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains radar echograms taken from the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) ultra Multichannel Coherent Radar Depth Sounder (MCoRDS) over land and sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. Version 2 data are provided in netCDF format.
The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Radar Studies of Subglacial Lake Whillans and the Whillans Ice Stream Grounding Zone. This data set includes ground-based, gridded, ice-penetrating radar thickness and basal reflection power, along with GPS coordinates, for two areas of Whillans Ice Stream: Subglacial Lake Whillans and the Whillans Ice Stream grounding zone.

This data set contains radar echograms taken from the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) ku-band radar over land and sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. Version 2 data are provided in netCDF format. See the Ku-Band Radar L1B data catalog page for more information.
The International Ice Patrol (IIP) Iceberg Sightings Database has been updated through 2013 and files have been reformatted for ease of use. The IIP has been collecting information on iceberg activity in the North Atlantic since 1913. This database contains the data from these sightings starting in 1960. The IIP data files include latitude and longitude of sighted icebergs, coded iceberg size and shape class, and date and time of the sighting.
Reprocessed NASA ICESat/GLAS GLAH01 HDF5 data are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). GLAH01 reprocessing was conducted to correct the format of the d_4nsBgMean parameter changing it from counts to volts. See the ICESat/GLAS data collection for more information. DOI:10.5067/ICESAT/GLAS/DATA101.
ICESat/GLAS Altimetry Release-34 HDF5 data are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) for products GLA05, GLA06, and GLA12-15.
NASA IceBridge Sander AIRGrav L4 Bathymetry data containing bathymetry of Arctic fjords and Antarctic ice shelves are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). See the Sander AIRGrav L4 Bathymetry data catalog page for more information.
The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has been informed that our data provider, MODAPS, identified corrupt files that may have impacted previously forward processed data for all MODIS snow and sea ice products. NSIDC recommends that MODIS snow and sea ice data users replace the following files: MODIS Terra Files from Day of Year (DOY) 256 to DOY 271, downloaded before 6 October 2014. Files from DOY 277 to 282, downloaded before 11 October 2014.
The Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid 2.0 Weekly Snow Cover and Sea Ice Extent (Version 4) has been updated through 29 June 2014. This product provides snow cover at weekly intervals beginning 03 October 1966, as well as combined snow cover and sea ice extent at weekly intervals beginning 23 October 1978. Designed to facilitate the study of Northern Hemisphere seasonal fluctuations of snow cover and sea ice extent, this product also includes monthly climatologies describing average extent, probability of occurrence, and variance.
NSIDC is experiencing delays receiving some MODIS data sets from our data provider. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact User Services if you have questions.
Corrected IceBridge Accumulation Radar L1B Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles, Version 2 data are now available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). The data set update corrects a time stamp error by adding 1 second to the GPS time. See the IceBridge Accumulation Radar Level-1B catalog page for documentation and data.
Corrected IceBridge Snow Radar L1B Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles, Version 2 data are now available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). The data set update corrects a time stamp error by adding 1 second to the GPS time. See the IceBridge Snow Radar Level-1B catalog page for documentation and data.
The MEaSUREs Northern Hemisphere Terrestrial Snow Cover Extent Daily 25 km EASE-Grid 2.0 data set is now available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set offers users 25 km Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent represented by four different variables. Three of the snow cover variables are derived from the Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System, MODIS Cloud Gap Filled Snow Cover, and passive microwave brightness temperatures, respectively.
NASA IceBridge Radar Level-3 Tomographic Ice Thickness data are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). See the Tomographic Ice Thickness data catalog page for more information.
The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Methyl Chloride Measurements in the Taylor Dome M3C1 Ice Core. This data set includes methyl chloride (CH3CI) measurements made on air extracted from 62 samples from the Taylor Dome M3C1 ice core in East Antarctica.
