Data Announcement

User notice: Retirement of the NASA LANCE HTTPS File System data archive for SMAP Near Real-time data sets

The Near Real-time SMAP L1B Radiometer Half-Orbit Time-Ordered Brightness Temperatures, Version 105, and the Near Real-time SMAP L2 Radiometer Half-Orbit 36 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 107, data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), in the NASA LANCE HTTPS File System data archive, will be retired on 4 February 2026. If you use this archive, we encourage you to update direct download workflows and scripts to use the new Earthdata Cloud access URLs.

Until late January, the Earthdata Cloud Access archive will be subject to weekly downtimes on Wednesdays as well as slightly increased latency compared to the NASA LANCE HTTPS archive. Another User Notice will be sent in the coming weeks with the exact date that the Earthdata Cloud archive will no longer be subject to these delays. If this is a concern, we recommend waiting to transition until that date in late January.

All NSIDC DAAC data, including SMAP Near Real-time data sets, in the NASA Earthdata Cloud can be accessed via HTTPS through:

https://cmr.earthdata.nasa.gov/search/site/collections/directory/NSIDC_CPRD/gov.nasa.eosdis

The NSIDC DAAC User Services Office provides support for direct data download from the Earthdata Cloud HTTPS and basic access to our AWS Simple Storage Service (S3) buckets. For more details on these access options, please see: https://nsidc.org/data/user-resources/help-center/nasa-earthdata-cloud-data-access-guide
