Detailed Data Description

This data set consists of borehole temperatures from different depths gathered by three thermistor strings, which were deployed in three boreholes drilled through the Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, Antarctica. Each string held 16 thermistors along its length spaced at varying distances from each other.


The data are in MATLAB (.mat) format.

File and Directory Structure

Data are available on the FTP site in the directory. Within this directory, there are three files: tstring1.mat, tstring2.mat, tstring3.mat. Refer to Table 1 for a list of the variables contained in each file.

Variable Description
tstringTemp n x 16 matrix of calibrated thermistor data in °C
yd 1 x n array of yearday (yyyddd.dddd). (Example: 2013009.5 would represent noon on yearday 9 of 20913.) All times are UT.
dx 1 x 16 array of distance of each thermistor from bottom of string where the bottom of the string is approximately at the ice/water interface. Thermistor 1 is the deepest thermistor.

Data Acquisition and Processing

Data Acquisition Methods

Three boreholes were drilled using hot water, and a thermistor string was deployed in each borehole. Each thermistor string held 16 thermistors. Thermistor strings 1 and 3 were placed at Pine Island Glacier Site A, and string 2 at Site B.
