[GLIMS] ASTER end of mission & new radiometric calibration

Dear GLIMS colleagues:
FYI, better/new ASTER L1A radiance calibrations are underway for the whole archive of ASTER scenes (email appended below). The sad news is the phrase "end of mission." You can read more about end of mission (now slated for Sep. 2023) here: https://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov.
Terra/ASTER has already begun its slow drift out of its two-decade-long orbit, but so far effects are quite minor.
Cheers,
Jeff Kargel

ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) is a high resolution imaging instrument that is flying on the Terra satellite. ASTER will obtain detailed maps of land surface temperature, emissivity, reflectance and elevation of the Earth.

Subject: [EXT]new radiometric calibration activities

The radiometric calibration working group has developed new calibration coefficients integrating on-board lamps, in situ cal/val. and the Lunar calibration. The LPDAAC, JPL team, Japan GDS and Science Team have agreed on an implementation schedule. This month GDS will start re-processing the entire ASTER archive (~ 4 million scenes) and produce new L1A scenes. Later, they will send all of the new L1As to the LPDAAC for end-of-mission archiving. Going forward, GDS will send newly acquired scenes to the DAAC, processed to L1A with new coefficients. On the LPDAAC side, GDS sent the DAAC new L1A software, and the DAAC and GDS verified that both sides could produce identical new L1As. At the DAAC, all user requests for ASTER products (L1B, L1T, higher level products) will be produced on-demand from DAAC- and GDS-created L1As with new calibration coefficients.
