Vacancy Announcement

Title: Glaciologist
Action Area: Monitoring and Assessment of Ice and Water Resources<http://www.icimod.org/?page=27>
Programme: Integrated Water and Hazard Management (IWHM)<http://www.icimod.org/?page=20>

ICIMOD is a regional knowledge development and learning centre serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush-Himalayas (HKH) <http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=43> - Afghanistan<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=104>, Bangladesh<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=105>, Bhutan<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=106>, China<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=107>, India<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=108>, Myanmar<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=109>, Nepal<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=110>, and Pakistan<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=111>. We are working to develop an economically and environmentally sound mountain ecosystem to improve the living standards of mountain populations -- now, and for the future. In line with its current Strategic Framework<http://www.icimod.org/?page=117>, ICIMOD is strengthening its capacity to develop new approaches to meet the growing challenges in the region posed by climate change and globalisation.

ICIMOD has developed a Medium Term Action Plan (2008-2012) organised around three programmes - Integrated Water and Hazard Management<http://www.icimod.org/?page=20>, Environmental Change and Ecosystem Services<http://www.icimod.org/?page=21>, and Sustainable Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction<http://www.icimod.org/?page=22> - supported by a strong Knowledge Management<http://www.icimod.org/?page=23> programme and specialists in gender, equity, and governance, and economics, working together on programmes designed to help people and regional governments develop policies to adapt to climate change, whilst local livelihoods are improved and the environment is protected.

The Integrated Water and Hazard Management (IWHM)<http://www.icimod.org/index.php?page=20> programme has as its main goal developing and achieving recognition of ICIMOD as a competent reference centre for regional level knowledge, information, and skills related to water and hazards. The programme plans to build a credible research base, appropriate technologies, and integrated approaches, developed in full consultation with national and regional partners. It aims to contribute to the four medium term outcomes related to improved assessment of snow, ice, and water resources; disaster risk reduction; and taking a holistic view from upstream sources to downstream impacts. Within the Programme, the Action Area on Monitoring and Assessment of Ice and Water Resources<http://www.icimod.org/?page=27> is working on Monitoring and Assessment of changes in glaciers, snowfields and glacio-hydrology in the HKH region<http://www.icimod.org/?page=43> with a special focus on strengthening the capacity of national organisations.

Tasks

Under the overall guidance of the Programme Manager, and direct supervision of the Action Area Team Leader, the glaciologist will perform tasks as outlined below.

 * Contribute to the design and implementation of national and regional training courses, workshops, and seminars in the field of cryosphere including glacier mass balance monitoring and hydrology
 * Help in the study of the dynamics of cryosphere, mechanisms and adaption of its impact on climate, and hydrology in the HKH region<http://www.icimod.org/?page=43>
 * Assist in glacier and snow monitoring based on remote sensing and in-situ observations
 * Design and participate in field missions and research programmes as and when necessary, most often in collaboration with national partners, for field-based glacier mapping and mass balance monitoring.
 * Take leadership in ICIMOD's agenda related to the cryosphere: This will entail ensuring good quality of plans, activities, and outputs related to cryosphere studies in ICIMOD's ongoing and forthcoming projects and programmes where this dimension is relevant
 * Conduct dialogue with national stakeholders in connection with the implementation of project activities
 * Provide insight into the relationship between changes to the cryosphere and its implications for downstream water availability, and what such changes may mean for society in general and people's livelihoods in particular, and assist in analysis of water availability scenarios on a sub basin scale
 * Develop and maintain a constructive dialogue with stakeholders in the region and beyond in the field of cryosphere and hydrology: in so doing, foster partnerships with national, regional, and global stakeholders for strategic collaboration in these fields
 * Contribute to the development of new project and programme components where cryosphere and hydrology have a place
 * Work as a team player within IWHM and ICIMOD, and support related activities and promote institutional goals
 * Act as an internal quality control and back stopping function in ICIMOD's implementation and delivery of snow and glacier data, services and knowledge products in the field of cryosphere and hydrology

Minimum qualifications

 * A post-graduate academic degree, preferably a PhD, in glaciology
 * Minimum ten years of varied experience in Glaciology, Glacial hydrology and modelling, Glacier mass balance training, and field works in glacier surveys and mass balance monitoring
 * Good knowledge of modelling of climate records and downscaling, and understanding of Institutions undertaking such tasks in the region and beyond
 * Good knowledge and experience in cryosphere related modelling
 * Good insight of progresses methodologies, tools, techniques, and findings related to climate change and glaciology in the region and globally
 * Able to work independently with a strong sense of professionalism and self-discipline, as well as an ability to take the initiative when needed
 * Knowledge of geographic information systems and remote sensing
 * Knowledge of installation of hydrological, meteorological, and glaciological instruments and of data retrieval and data acquisition from them
 * Capable of field visits to high altitude remote locations in the HKH region<http://www.icimod.org/?page=43>
 * Able to prepare project proposals, progress reports, and others for submission to ICIMOD sponsors; skills in project planning, negotiation, and assessment
 * Able to prepare articles for peer reviewed journals
 * Comfortable working in multidisciplinary teams, particularly with international/regional agencies, and to work with colleagues and collaborators of diverse national and cultural backgrounds

Others

 * Computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, statistical packages, GIS and RS, and cryosphere related required
 * Internet literacy: email, internet search, participation in list-serves or electronic conferences
 * Language skills: demonstrated ability to speak and write professionally, fluently, and correctly in English; knowledge of other regional languages highly desirable
 * Health: physically fit to undertake frequent travel to remote and difficult mountainous regions
