Dear Colleagues,

1. GLIMS paper in Remote Sensing of Environment
2. Oct 24, 2005: GLIMS miniworkshop in Tucson, Arizona
3. Feb 6-10, 2006: GLIMS Workshop in New Zealand

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. GLIMS paper in Remote Sensing of Environment

A special issue of the journal Remote Sensing of Environment focussing on
ASTER science applications is in press, and a GLIMS contribution
spearheaded by Jeff Kargel entitled " Multispectral Imaging Contributions
to Global Land Ice Measurements from Space" will be included. It is
available now as a 2 MB PDF file from the GLIMS website, at
http://www.glims.org/Publications/RSE-D-05-85.pdf

2. Oct 24, 2005: GLIMS miniworkshop in Tucson, Arizona

Besides asking you to keep in mind the next major GLIMS workshop to be held
in New Zealand in early February 2006, we are happy to announce and invite
your participation in a one-day GLIMS miniworkshop, October 24th, 2005, to
be hosted at the University of Arizona (Tucson). The miniworkshop will
have two primary themes: (a) Organization of an Alaska Regional Center,
and (b) finalization of the design of a Second Round-Robin analysis test
and adoption of standard analysis protocols by GLIMS. For those who get to
Tucson early, there may be an afternoon/evening hike nearby on Sunday, the
23rd. If you wish to be involved, please send your indication of interest
to Jeff Kargel (kargel at hwr.arizona.edu) AND Bruce Raup (braup at nsidc.org).

3. Feb 6-10, 2006: GLIMS Workshop in New Zealand

This was previously announced on CRYOLIST. That announcement is repeated
below.

  GLIMS WORKSHOP, 6 -- 10 FEBRUARY 2006, NEW ZEALAND

We are pleased to announce that the next GLIMS workshop will be held in
New Zealand from 6-10 February 2006. A venue has been secured in the
South Island town of Twizel situated at the back door of the Southern
Alps, and New Zealand's highest mountain, Aoraki, Mount Cook. The
Mackenzie Country Inn will both accommodate workshop participants and
provide workshop facilities. This workshop will be run in conjunction
with New Zealand's Snow and Ice Research Group (SIRG) workshop, which
will offer us an enlightening view on local research. A couple of days
for field trips has also been set aside. The general schedule is as
  follows:

6 and 7 February GLIMS workshop
  8 February SIRG Workshop
9 and 10 February Field trips to local glaciated areas

Initial indications of the cost of the workshop are approximately US$800
plus airfare to New Zealand. This cost includes accommodation for 5
nights, all meals for 5 days, travel to the venue from Christchurch (the
nearest international airport), and local field trips (any tourist
flights or professional guides would be additional to this). This
workshop will serve as a venue for presentation of science results and
discussion of any concerns by GLIMS members and others in the
glaciological community. In addition, we will pursue the final
organization and writing of chapters for a technical book on the topic of
Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (provisional publisher is
Praxis-Springer). More will be forthcoming about the book well in advance
of this workshop. This workshop has kindly been organised by our local
hosts from the University of Canterbury, the National Institute for Water
and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and Antarctica New Zealand. New Zealand
is a spectacular setting to hold this workshop and will afford fantastic
opportunities for those who wish to spend some time in the country for
personal travel. More information will be circulated in due course, but
we wanted to highlight the dates for you to set aside in your calendar.
Interested people should respond to Shulamit Gordon
(s.gordon at antarcticanz.govt.nz) AND Jeff Kargel (kargel at hwr.arizona.edu)
as soon as possible to give an indication of numbers.

Sincerely,

Jeff Kargel, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, USA
Bruce Raup, National Snow and Ice Data Center, Boulder, CO, USA
