Dear GLIMS colleagues,

This GLIMS update has one item, which I am sure you will all be interested
in. It is excerpts from two letters, the first from the U.S. ASTER
Science Team leader (Anne Kahle) and the second from the Japanese ASTER
Ground Data System Project Manager (Watanabe-san).

>From Kahle, 21 Sep. 2000:

>MITI's External Review
>resulted in 1) declaring that the ASTER ICO (Initial Check Out) Phase is
>over, and 2) recommending that the data be released to the public soon.
>GDS is estimating release about Oct. 6. We estimate that the US (EDC)
will
>probably be able to start releasing data a couple of weeks after that,
>depending on their receipt and successful ingest of the version 1.0
>software from Japan.
>Stay tuned.

>From Watanabe-san, 22 Sep. 2000:

>One necessary condition of the data
>delivery to the public is the price of the data. This is currently
discussed
>with MITI.

Sincerely,

Jeff Kargel
