Dear GLIMS colleagues,I would like to remind the GLIMS community of the January 16 deadline for abstracts to be submitted to Spring EGU (meeting 27 April-2 May 2014, Vienna). There are many planned glacier sessions. Among these is one that Christian Huggel, David Vaughan, and I will convene, but there are many other GLIMS-relevant sessions, so please consider submitting an abstract if you have not already done so. Please also keep your eyes on the UGS meeting calendar; among many other pertinent global and regional or thematic meetings, there will be an IGS Symposium in March 2015 on Glaciology in High Mountain Asia, which is to be cosponsored by ICIMOD and organized by many GLIMS members; please plan ahead.
EGU session CR4.3: Risks from a changing cryosphere:
http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2014/session/14137Submission deadline is 16 January 2014. This session aims at developing an integrative and broad perspective on risks from the cryosphere, such as related to glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, permafrost and snow. The session invites contributions across all cryosphere components that apply a risk perspective concerning observed or projected physical processes. Contributions considering more than one cryosphere component (e.g. glaciers and permafrost) are particularly encouraged. As such, it particularly addresses complex processes across different components of the cryosphere. Contributions may consider hazards and risks related to changes in the past, present or future. Both new risks and opportunities may be of relevance, as long as a critical analysis is provided. Since risk is also a function of socio-economic aspects, submissions extending the perspective beyond physical aspects are welcome. We particularly encourage contributions from the sea ice and ice sheet community where aspects of risks are often not very specifically addressed (at least at EGU) which is somewhat in disagreement with the dimensions of risk involved there. Hajo Eicken (UAF) will give a keynote on sea ice related risks. Christian Huggel, Jeff Kargel, David Vaughan, session conveners
