How to visualize MODIS WMS layers with ArcGIS and Google Earth

NASA's Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) provides up to date, full resolution imagery for selected MODIS data sets. Adding GIBS layers via OGC methods, such as Web Map Service (WMS), Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) and Tiled Web Map Service (TWMS) provides an easy way to visualize the entire time series of MODIS data in commerical tools like ArcGIS and Google Earth. Directions on how to add WMS layers to ArcGIS and Google Earth are provided on this NASA web page. The following table identifies what MODIS data sets and related science parameters are available as GIBS imagery.

Data set Parameter
MOD10_L2MYD10_L2 Snow Cover (Normalized Difference Snow Index)
MOD10A1MYD10A1 Snow Cover (Normalized Difference Snow Index, L3, Daily)
MOD10A2MYD10A2 Snow Extent (L3, 8-Day)
MOD10CMMYD10CM Days with Snow Cover (L3, Monthly, Average Percent)
MOD29 & MYD29  Sea Ice
MOD29P1D & MYD29P1D Sea Ice Extent (L3, Daily)
