Dear all,Good news: I held the first released actual physical copy of the GLIMS book. It is truly beautiful and as content-rich as contributors all knew it to be. The physical presentation is stunning and the quality of the book's cover, binding, page density, image quality are all as good as anything I've seen. Its also a massive book.
Bad news: I am a bit frustrated to say that in my first minutes looking at the book, I discovered that the publisher used a 2-year-old file for the back cover, which mentions the supplemental DVD, which 2 years ago changed to supplemental online material. I didn't even want to point this error out to Springer, because everything else about the book is great, and we could all live with an annoying blunder on the back cover. But... I pointed it out to Springer; now they have pulled all the books and are producing new covers and rebinding it. So EVERYTHING, including the press release, is on hold. I am told that we will have a new publication date soon. Last time they goofed up with too-thin pages, and then goofed again with not a wide enough spine after they fixed the page density, it was corrected in 13 days. We can hope it is only that long. Meanwhile, maybe I have a collector's item with the errant book cover if it is the only one released.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this nightmare has to end sometime. Actually, I prefer to think about how nice the book looks (it really is gorgeous), and complete with its "DVD" error my singular copy certainly will help hold my coffee table down.
