GLIMS Update: Miniworkshop at MOCA-09, July 22

Dear GLIMS colleagues,A GLIMS miniworkshop and then a related Mass Balance Terminology meeting will take place on July 22, 2009, in room 516a in the Palais des Congres (the MOCA-09 venue). Bruce Raup and I have developed the following agenda.  We solicit presentations or discussion topics from attendees.  Please send additional titles or topics to Jeff Kargel, or just bring them to the meeting.
The day's agenda will be approximately as follows (with fluidity to allow for addition or deletion of talks):

Participants should plan to have breakfast on their own before the meeting.

8:45: Introduction, including personal introductions, and an overview of
plans for a major GLIMS workshop in Mendoza, Argentina, November 2010
(Kargel).

9:00: GLIMS Book status (Kargel)

9:15: Recent RC activity, new data in the database, DB stats (Raup)
9:45: Movement to merge or cross-link GLIMS and WGMS databases, plus
NSIDC's glacier photography database -- all under the GTN-G umbrella. This work will also feature a web site that has an interactive map combining these datasets. (Raup)10:05: Updates on tool development, GLACE comparisons (glacier outlining experiments) (Raup)10:30: Break11:00: SISMOD (Snow-Ice-Soil MODel), A radiative transfer model for complex mixtures, Jeff Kargel on behalf of Roberto Furfaro11:10-11:30: Fuzzy C Means approach to classification of Root Glacier, comparisons to manual methods of classification, and field validation (Furfaro, Kargel) 11:30-11:50: Introduction to GLACE-CLASS (GLacier Analysis Comparison Experiment--CLASSification): Overview of some classification approaches and the need for the experiment (Kargel, Leonard, and Furfaro)11:50 Scheduling of early afternoon talks by attendees12:00: Lunch1:30: Science updates, issues arising, and general discussion.

request, or just come to the meeting with them; but please don't duplicate MOCA-09 presentations, or minimize duplication of presentations.
15:00 Break15:15: Mass Balance Terminology (MBT) meeting, covering topics including
definition of glacier, glacier length, mass balance terminology, and so on. (Cogley and Kaser, with contributions by Bruce Raup)
