Dear GLIMS affiliate,
I would like to inform you about the improved and more structured
cooperation between the World Glacier Monitoring Service, the US National
Snow and Ice Data Center, and the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space
initiative. Over the past year we have, under the leadership of Michael
Zemp and with other colleagues at NSIDC and the WGMS, developed the idea of
establishing a 'Steering Committee for the Global Terrestrial Network for
Glaciers' in order to coordinate, support, and advise the WGMS, NSIDC, and
GLIMS concerning the monitoring of glaciers and ice caps. The GTN-G
Steering Committee will consist of an Executive Board, staffed by
representatives of WGMS, NSIDC, and GLIMS, and an Advisory Board under the
lead of the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS).
Please find attached a document covering (i) the background and aim, (ii)
generic structure, and (iii) terms of reference of the GTN-G Steering
Committee to be proposed to the IACS Bureau in October 2008. This new
framework will not replace any existing organizations, but rather build on
them in order to develop their strengths and jointly improve their weak
points.
If you have any questions or comments on this intensified cooperation,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
Bruce Raup, on behalf of the GLIMS team
P.S. You've received this because you are listed as a chief of a GLIMS
Regional Center or Steward.
