Open PhD position: Global glacier monitoring within the ESA project
GlobGlacier
We invite applications for a Ph.D. research position for mapping and
monitoring of glaciers at a global scale by advanced satellite remote
sensing and GIS techniques within the framework of the ESA project
GlobGlacier. Besides the further development of automated glacier mapping
techniques from multispectral sensors under challenging conditions, a
special focus is on the integration and post-processing of data from
different sensors (incl. microwave) and sources to generate a set of
products for various user communities as well as on the assessment of
glacier changes.
The successful candidate has a strong background in multispectral remote
sensing (incl. orthorectification and DEM generation with SPOT and ASTER),
glaciology (incl. field experience and global observing strategies) and
applied geo-informatics (incl. geomorphologic modelling and data bases).
She or he is expected to apply the developed techniques to a large number
of glaciers in regions with poor data. The interdisciplinary research
activity will be performed in close cooperation with project partners in
Switzerland, Austria, Norway and UK as well as international organizations
and programs (WGMS, GLIMS, NSIDC, GCOS/GTOS).
The project is funded by ESAs DUE program for a maximum period of three
years and will be performed at the Department of Geography at the
University of Zurich. The deadline for applications is 23. October 2007,
the earliest start of the work is 1. November 2007. The salary is
according to the rules of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Please
send a letter of interest and a CV with a description of your relevant
university courses (both in PDF format) to: fpaul at geo.unizh.ch.
With thanks for your interest and kind regards, Frank Paul
