NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of the Contribution to High Asia Runoff from Ice and Snow (CHARIS) Melt Model Output, 2001 – 2014 data set. The CHARIS project aimed to distinguish the specific contribution of seasonal snow and glacier ice melt in five major river basins of High Mountain Asia: Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus, Amu Darya, and Syr Darya. CHARIS investigators developed a systematic way of using remote sensing, reanalysis, and in situ data to calibrate and run temperature index melt models. Applying this approach, they were able to draw conclusions for the entire study region. This data set contains input and output data for the temperature index melt model that was run for the CHARIS project at NSIDC.

NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of version 2 of On-Ice Arctic Sea Ice Thickness Measurements by Auger, Core, and Electromagnetic Induction, from the Late 1800s Onward. In addition to sea ice thickness, the data set provides sea ice freeboard and snow depth on sea ice from on-ice measurements taken primarily using auger, coring devices, and electromagnetic (EM) sounding. When available, ice type is also included. Version 2 of the archive was compiled from 50 different expeditions starting with measurements from the Jeannette Expedition from 1879 to 1881, then to the Fram Expedition in 1894 and 1895, the Maud Expedition from 1922 through 1924, and continues to the most recent record to date from 2016.

The data set consists of 69,482 ice-thickness measurements from across the Arctic. The figure below shows a map with the location and density of the measurements.

NOAA@NSIDC has long partnered with the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) in Switzerland to improve the quality and completeness of glacier data. NSIDC’s User Services office gets questions from the public about glaciers that our data hold the answers to – seemingly simple questions like “What are the largest glaciers on the planet?”  Ann Windnagel set out to find answers during a stay with WGMS and found that it’s not such a simple matter. NOAA@NSIDC has updated their September and March Sea Ice Index sea ice animations in Google Earth with 2019 near-real-time data and replaced the 2018 near-real-time images with final data. To access the Google Earth files, see the NSIDC Data on Google Earth page.

NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce that the NOAA Polar Orbiting Satellite (POES) Global Visible and Infrared Band Data from ESSA (1966 – 1972) and NOAA (1972 – 1978) Satellites, Version 1 data set, is now available at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). This data set consists of daily visible-band (VIS) imagery and infrared-band (IR) imagery from the Environmental Sciences Service Administration (ESSA) satellites, the Improved TIROS Operational System 1 (ITOS 1) satellite, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites covering December 1966 through March 1978 (IR data begin in December 1972). The data set was created by scanning the analog imagery from these satellites held in the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) physical archives in Asheville, NC. NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce that the NOAA/NSIDC Climate Data Record of Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration, Version 3 data set is now available through 2018. This data set provides a Climate Data Record (CDR) of sea ice concentration from passive microwave data. It provides a consistent, daily and monthly time series of sea ice concentrations from 09 July 1987 through 31 December 2018 for both the north and south polar regions on a 25 km x 25 km grid. Note that the 2018 data for near-real-time version of this data set called Near-Real-Time NOAA/NSIDC Climate Data Record of Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration, Version 1 has been removed since the final processed version supersedes the NRT version. If you have the 2018 NRT data, we suggest that you download and replace it with the 2018 final processed version of this data set.

NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce that the Sea Ice Index has been updated from near-real-time data to final data for the time period 01 January 2018 through 31 December 2018.

Initially, when the Sea Ice Index is first processed, it uses a near-real-time (NRT) sea ice concentration product as it input. This NRT product can contain missing data and has less quality control procedures applied to it than the final sea ice concentration input product provided by NASA Goddard. However, the final input product often lags behind the present by approximately a year. Using the NRT product allows the Sea Ice Index to provide sea ice extent and concentration data for the previous day. When the final NASA Goddard sea ice concentration product becomes available, NOAA@NSIDC reprocesses the data for that time period so that the more tightly quality controlled and gap filled input data are used for the Sea Ice Index computations. The Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS), Version 1 data set, accessible through the NOAA program at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NOAA@NSIDC), was updated to correct for an extra “./“ in some of the data file paths. Users accessing this data set through a script may need to update their scripts to account for this correction.

In addition, the filename extensions for the uncompressed header files (.hdr) have been renamed to text (.txt) format. The decision to rename the file extensions was made to reduce users confusing these with standard .hdr files read by software packages like ENVI or ArcGIS. NOAA@NSIDC and the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder Libraries are pleased to announce that the Glacier Photograph Collection (GPC) has recently been updated with over 8,000 new historical images, collected from 1883 through 2012. The GPC holds digital images of glaciers from around the world, most of which were digitized by scanning prints or glass negatives, but many that also originated in digital form. Some of the images date back to the mid-19th century and provide an historical reference for glacier extent. This update increases the size of the online, digital collection by 35%, bringing the total to approximately 25,000 glacier images.

The new GPC images were created by scanning selections from a large analog collection of photographic prints that had not been scanned in earlier work. The analog collection, previously held by NSIDC, now resides in CU Boulder Libraries’ archive. Research was conducted to find and assign... more

NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce that the Arctic Submarine Lab (ASL) has corrected and reprocessed the sea ice draft data for the 2011 USS Connecticut and USS New Hampshire SCICEX campaigns and the 2014 USS New Mexico SCICEX campaigns. When the data were first released in 2015, the upward looking sonar data received from the submarine were the peak returns instead of the first returns of the signal. This can cause the sea ice draft data to be biased towards thinner ice. ASL has been able to retrieve the first return signals and feels confident that these data are now an accurate portrayal of the sea ice draft data. Note that the 2014 USS Hampton campaigns are still under review and will be released as time allows.
