NOAA Web Sites
Links to other NOAA Web sites regarding polar research, snow and ice analysis and forecasting, and data management.
NOAA Arctic Research Office (ARO) & Theme Page: Provides a wealth of well-organized information for the general public, including Ask an Expert essays on the Arctic. In addition, the Arctic Theme Page provides access to widely distributed arctic data and information for scientists, students, teachers, and managers. The ARO is a focal point for NOAA's research activities in the Arctic, Bering Sea, North Pacific, and North Atlantic regions.
Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL): Located in Seattle, WA, PMEL conducts oceanographic and atmospheric research. Polar activities are coordinated through a Coastal and Arctic Research Division and emphasize fisheries and large-scale circulation. PMEL is part of NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.
Cooperative Institute for Arctic Research (CIFAR): Located at the University of Alaska, CIFAR works closely with NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, administers the NOAA Arctic Research Initiative, and coordinates U.S. contributions to the Arctic Council's Arctic Climate Impact Assessment. CIFAR is, like NSIDC's parent organization CIRES, a NOAA-University Joint Institute. The Joint Institutes promote closer cooperation between researchers from universities and NOAA laboratories.
Snow and Ice Analysis and Forecasting
National Ice Center (NIC): Operated by the U.S. Navy, NOAA, and the U.S. Coast Guard, NIC provides worldwide operational sea ice analyses and forecasts. NIC products constitute an important resource for polar researchers and are archived at NSIDC. NIC is affiliated with the NOAA/NESDIS Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution and the NOAA National Weather Service.
National Weather Service Environmental Monitoring Center: Weather, marine, and climate prediction modeling and analysis.
NOAA Satellite and Information Service: Meets the Nation's needs for access to global environmental data from satellites and other sources.
National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC): Provides long-term stewardship for and access to geophysical data.
National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC): A repository and dissemination facility for global ocean data.
National Climatic Data Center (NCDC): The world's largest active archive of weather and climate data.
