On Friday, 06 November 2015 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (USA Mountain Time), our FTP services, which also includes automated data requests from services such as Polaris and the GLAS Subsetter, will be unavailable because of system maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
Other Major GGD Nodes
The Frozen Ground Data Center (FGDC) serves as a central node of the IPA Global Geocryological Data (GGD) system. The GGD is an internationally distributed system linking investigators and data centers around the world. The FGDC facilitates the operation of the GGD by collecting and distributing information (metadata) describing permafrost and frozen ground related data. Many of the products listed here are available directly through the FGDC; some are held by other institutions. For those data sets held by other institutions, NSIDC provides the original metadata for the data set, and asks users to contact the Principal Investigator for access to the data.
We urge investigators to contribute their frozen ground data and metadata to the GGD. All contributors will be fully credited, and we encourage users of these data to formally cite data contributors.
You can access the Frozen Ground Data Sets through the NSIDC Search Tool.
The CAPS CD-ROM is a major component of the IPA's Global Geocryological Data (GGD) system. NSIDC and the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) developed the FGDC as a central node in the GGD system. CAPS is intended to be a snapshot of FGDC data and metadata holdings as of spring 2003. However, beginning in 2008, NSIDC no longer distributes CAPS data via CD-ROM. The data published on CAPS are only available through NSIDC's FGDC Web site. The FGDC holds the most current permafrost and frozen ground data and information. For more information on the CAPS CD-ROM, see the CAPS catalog page.
