Detailed Data Description

This data set includes raw dust microparticle data for the WAIS Divide deep core, WDC06A, from the surface to 577 m. Data were collected in 2010 using a Klotz Abakus laser particle counter connected to a continuous ice core melter system at the University of Maine.


Data are in tab-delimited ASCII text (.txt) format.

Data are available on the FTP site in the directory. Within this directory, there is one file: wdc06A_dust_conc_all_channels.txt.

The text file does not contain column header information. The columns are as follows:



1 Depth (m; top and bottom depths for each tube are from NICL database)
2 Age (WDC06A-7 timescale; years reported as decimal years)
3 through 32

Concentrations of particles, in units of particles per mL of water, in each bin

33 Total particle concentration (all bins), in units of particles per mL of water

Data Acquisition Methods

Data were collected in 2010 using a Klotz Abakus laser particle counter connected to a continuous ice core melter system at the University of Maine.

Derivation Techniques and Algorithms

Particles were measured in 30 channels spanning 1-15 μm diameter; data are reported as the number of particles per ml of melt water from the melted piece of core. While data are reported once per second, the effective resolution of our system is ~2 cm in low-density firn and 1 cm in glacial ice. Lower bin diameters are listed below, such that the first bin contains particles with diameters 1.0-1.1 μm, the second bin contains particles 1.1-1.2 μm diameter, and so on. The upper limit of the last bin is 15 μm. Zero (0) implies a concentration of 0; NaN implies no measurement. Note that the lower 2-3 bins likely contain additional particle counts related to particles below 1.0 μm diameter (we infer this based on particle size distribution curves). Data have been linearly interpolated to even temporal spacing.
