Data for MODIS Collection 6.1 are being processed from the beginning of the MODIS data record. As such, the temporal coverage will be incomplete until processing catches up to the present day. To access the complete temporal coverage of this specific data set in Collection 6.0, add “/versions/6" to the end of the URL. MODIS Collection 6.0 data sets will be processed continuously through summer 2022, after which forward processing will cease.
NSIDC has paused ingest of new MODIS and VIIRS data over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. We expect ingest to resume early next week, with new data files available on or around November 30th.

MODIS/Aqua Sea Ice Extent and IST Daily L3 Global 4km EASE-Grid Day, Version 61

This global Level-3 (L3) data set provides Northern and Southern Hemisphere maps of sea ice extent and ice surface temperature. The maps are generated by compositing 1 km observations from the 'MODIS/Aqua Sea Ice Extent Daily L3 Global 1km EASE-Grid Day’ (https://doi.org/10.5067/MODIS/MYD29P1D.061) product. These data are provided daily in the EASE-Grid polar projection at a resolution of approximately 4 km.

The terms "Version 61" and "Collection 6.1" are used interchangeably in reference to this release of MODIS data.

This is the most recent version of these data.

Version Summary:

This C61 product is identical in format to the C6 version. The C61 reprocessing does not contain any change to the science algorithm used to generate this product. Any improvement or change in the C61 product compared to the C6 product is from changes and enhancements to the calibration approach used to generate the input products and changes to the polarization correction used in this collection reprocessing.

FAQ

What data subsetting, reformatting, and reprojection services are available for MODIS data?
The following table describes the data subsetting, reformatting, and reprojection services that are currently available for MODIS data via the NASA Earthdata Search tool. Short Name Title Parameter Subsetting Spatial Subsetting... read more
Missing and delayed MODIS data
The lag time between observations and availability of MODIS products is only a few days. Lag time may be extended due to satellite maneuvers and extra quality assurance required for the geolocation data after the maneuver. The MODAPS... read more
Can I merge MODIS data from Collections 6 and 6.1 for a given data set?
In short, yes. For the snow cover and sea ice products, users can use Collections 6 and 6.1 together. Users should be aware that there were minor changes in calibration for C6.1 that could potentially induce some differences, however the impacts of these changes on the snow and sea ice products... read more
