Data set updates: AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L3 Global Daily/5-Day/Monthly 25km EASE-Grid Snow Water Equivalent, Version 1

The AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L3 Global Daily/5-Day/Monthly 25km EASE-Grid Snow Water Equivalent, Version 1 data sets, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been updated. The data have been reprocessed to correct for the artificial, uniform boundary extending across North America for the snow water equivalent (SWE) values. The filenames for these reprocessed data contain ‘B02’ instead of ‘B01’. The 5-day, daily and monthly data sets provide maximum estimates of SWE derived from brightness temperature measurements acquired by the AMSR2 instrument on the JAXA GCOM-W1 satellite.

Three AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified brightness temperature and sea ice polar gridded data sets, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been updated to correct errors in data designated with the B02 Product Maturity Code:

The following corrections are included in this update, which has been designated with the B04 Product Maturity code:

  • A coding error was corrected which affected the 25km Northern Hemisphere ICEDIFF data fields with approximately 50% of the cells changing by -20 to 10 with a root mean square error of 8.
  • An adjustment in the calculation of the ICEDIFF data fields was made which affected approximately 50% of all ICEDIFF data fields by +/-1.
  • Northern Hemisphere water filter parameters were adjusted to better characterize the open water cluster during the cold months. This change affected data contained in the NH_ICEDIFF Data Fields from October through May and eliminated, on average, approximately 60% of false ice in the open ocean.

This update has been designated with the B04 Product Maturity code. The changes were implemented in two processing stages, B03 and B04. B03 was never publicly available and all changes are included in the B04 release.

New data set releases: AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified Global 25-km EASE-grid Snow Water Equivalent data

The AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified Global 25-km EASE-grid Snow Water Equivalent, Version 1 data sets (daily; 5-day; monthly) are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). These data sets provide estimates of Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) derived from brightness temperature measurements acquired by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) instrument on board the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) GCOM-W1 satellite. These data are mapped to a 25 km Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grid (EASE-Grid) for both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres with coverage from 02 July 2012 to the present.

Data set update: AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L3 Daily 6.25 km Polar Gridded 89 GHz Brightness Temperatures

The AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L3 Daily 6.25 km Polar Gridded 89 GHz Brightness Temperatures, Version 1 data set available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has been updated to reflect a new version. The data file names are now designated with a B02 Product Maturity Code. Since all the AMSR-E/2 Unified sea ice products are produced by the same software, this version was generated as a result of reprocessing of the AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L3 Daily 25 km Brightness Temperatures & Sea Ice Concentration Polar Grid, Version 1 data set to B02 to correct an error. There are no changes to the 6.25 km data in the B02 version. Only the file name has changed to reflect the new version.

The AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L3 Daily 25 km Brightness Temperatures & Sea Ice Concentration Polar Grid Version 1 data set available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has been reprocessed to correct an issue with the parameter designation (indexing) with the brightness temperature values in the B01 product. The file names for the data set have changed to reflect this update and are now designated with a B02 Product Maturity Code. This data set provides sea ice concentration derived from brightness temperatures using the NASA Team 2 (NT2) algorithm for the Northern and Southern Hemisphere from 02 July 2012 to present and includes: six daily brightness temperature fields for channels ranging from 6.9 through 89.0 GHz, three daily sea ice concentration fields, three daily sea ice concentration difference fields for ascending/descending orbits, and full orbit daily averages.

The AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L3 Daily 12.5 km Brightness Temperatures, Sea Ice Concentration, Motion & Snow Depth Polar Grids, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set includes daily brightness temperature fields for channels ranging from 18.7 GHz through 89.0 GHz, daily sea ice concentration fields, and daily sea ice concentration difference fields for ascending orbits, descending orbits, and full orbit daily averages. Snow depth over sea ice is provided as a five-day running average for the Arctic and Antarctic. Sea Ice motion is provided daily for tracking ice movement over consecutive days in the Arctic. These data are mapped to a polar stereographic grid at 12.5 km spatial resolution and extend from 2 July 2012 to the present. This product uses the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) AMSR2 Level-1R input brightness temperatures that are calibrated (unified) across the JAXA AMSR-E and JAXA AMSR2 Level-1R products.

This product uses the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) AMSR2 Level-1R input brightness temperatures that are calibrated (unified) across the JAXA AMSR-E and AMSR2 Level-1R products. Data are mapped to a polar stereographic grid at 6.25 km spatial resolution and are available from 2 July 2012 through the present.

AMSR2 Unified L2B Surface Soil Moisture Reprocessing Now Complete

Reprocessing of the AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L2B Half-Orbit 25 km EASE-Grid Surface Soil Moisture, Version 1 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), is complete for all data from 2 July 2012 to present. The Beta 02 (B02) algorithm update corrects an error that caused only half of each swath to be processed. This data set includes surface soil moisture estimates derived from L1R brightness temperatures from AMSR2.

Reprocessing of AMSR2 Unified L2B Surface Soil Moisture

The AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L2B Half-Orbit 25 km EASE-Grid Surface Soil Moisture, Version 1 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated to the Beta 02 (B02) algorithm. The B02 update corrects an error that caused only half of each swath to be processed. Processing with the B02 algorithm began on May 03 2018. Data from July 07 2012 through May 02 2018 will be reprocessed.

AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L2B Half-Orbit 25 km EASE-Grid Surface Soil Moisture, Version 1 Released

The Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS) has released the AMSR-E/AMSR2 Unified L2B Half-Orbit 25 km EASE-Grid Surface Soil Moisture data set. This data set provides a long-term data record (23 July 2002 through present) using a combination of AMSR-E and AMSR2 data with reprocessed AMSR-E L1R brightness temperatures. Backprocessing is ongoing, with data available from 23 July 2012 to date.

These data are available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC).
