AGDC Overview

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) data collections are now available from the U.S. Antarctic Program Data Center (USAP-DC).

In 2016, USAP-DC partnered with the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) to consolidate National Science Foundation (NSF) glaciology data into the U.S. Antarctic Program which provides a central USAP Project Catalog for all projects funded by the NSF Antarctic program and a Data Repository for research datasets derived from these projects. USAP-DC provides data publication and long-term archiving services, and registers project and data set information in the Antarctic Master Directory (AMD).

All AGDC data previously archived with NSIDC are now available via the USAP-DC and can be found using the USAP-DC search tools. Click the buttons below to submit data directly to the USAP-DC or search USAP-DC holdings.

Antarctic Glaciology Data Center History

From 1999 to 2018, NSIDC managed the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Glaciology Data Center (AGDC). From 2016 to 2018, the AGDC data sets were transferred to the United States Antarctic Program - Data Center (USAP-DC) at Columbia University. NSIDC currently acts as a broker to the data sets by hosting the metadata for discovery in the NSIDC data catalog.

A focus early on was support of major ice coring efforts under the Siple Dome project, the International TransAntarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) program, and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) initiative. As the AGDC matured, increased focus was given to acquiring all field research data under the NSF USAP Antarctic Glaciology program, managed by Dr. Julie Palais, and to include other data collections such as Antarctic Ice Temperature Data (THERMAP), Antarctic Ice Velocity Data (VELMAP), Mosaic of Antarctica (MOA), and Ice Shelf Satellite Imagery.
