Each product contains bit flags, uncertainty measures, and file-level metadata that provide quality information. For information regarding the specific bit flags, uncertainty measures, and file-level metadata contained in this product, refer to the Data Fields and Metadata Fields documents.

Each HDF5 file contains metadata with Quality Assessment (QA) metadata flags that are set by the Science Data Processing System (SDS) at the JPL prior to delivery to NSIDC. A separate metadata file with an .xml file extension is also delivered to NSIDC with the HDF5 file; it contains the same information as the HDF5 file-level metadata.

If a product does not fail QA, it is ready to be used for higher-level processing, browse generation, active science QA, archive, and distribution. If a product fails QA, it is never delivered to NSIDC DAAC.</Quality><Use_Constraints>As a condition of using these data, you must cite the use of this data set using the recommended citation. SMAP L-band brightness temperatures and Copernicus Sentinel-1 C-band backscatter coefficients are used to derive soil moisture data, which are then resampled to an Earth-fixed, cylindrical 3 km Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grid, Version 2.0 (EASE-Grid 2.0).

Note: These data are Beta-release quality, meaning that they have not undergone full validation and may still contain significant errors.
<Related_URL><URL_Content_Type><Type>VIEW RELATED INFORMATION</Type></URL_Content_Type>

SMAP/Sentinel-1 L2 Radiometer/Radar 30-Second Scene 3 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 1 User Guide
</Related_URL><Related_URL><URL_Content_Type><Type>GET DATA</Type></URL_Content_Type>

Data Access Tool
</Related_URL><Related_URL><URL_Content_Type><Type>VIEW RELATED INFORMATION</Type></URL_Content_Type>

SMAP Data at NASA ASF DAAC
</Related_URL><Related_URL><URL_Content_Type><Type>VIEW RELATED INFORMATION</Type></URL_Content_Type>

SMAP Data at NASA NSIDC DAAC
</Related_URL><Related_URL><URL_Content_Type><Type>PROJECT HOME PAGE</Type></URL_Content_Type>

SMAP Web Site at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
</Related_URL><Related_URL><URL_Content_Type><Type>VIEW RELATED INFORMATION</Type></URL_Content_Type>

SMAP Validation Data at NASA NSIDC DAAC
</Related_URL><Metadata_Name>CEOS IDN DIF</Metadata_Name><Metadata_Version>VERSION 9.9</Metadata_Version><DIF_Creation_Date>2017-11-02</DIF_Creation_Date><Last_DIF_Revision_Date>2026-08-19</Last_DIF_Revision_Date><Extended_Metadata><Metadata><Group>NSIDC</Group>
<Value>First public data release (Beta)</Value></Metadata><Metadata><Group>NSIDC</Group>
<Value><number>R15180</number>
First public data release
<start_datetime>2015-04-01</start_datetime><end_datetime>2018-01-08</end_datetime><view_order>1</view_order></Value><Value><number>R15181</number>
No science change.
