Description:
Wilkes Station from the air, during the Australian take-over in January 1959. In the foreground is the Southern Ocean, with a few stray ice floes. In the middle ground is one of the rocky peninsulas of the "Windmill Islands", with the Station on its tip. Some 3 km in the background the peninsulas are covered by the East Antarctic ice sheet, rising for 2700 km to the South Pole. Original Slide 2 of 30.
