Scope and Contents: This collection of photographs from Wilkes Station, Antarctica were digitized from Institute of Arctic and Alpine Reserach's (INSTAAR) holdings as part of the National Snow and Ice Data Center's (NSIDC) International Polary Year Historic Literature harvesting project called DAHLI. Wilkes Station was built during the International Geophysical Year between 1957-1958.
John T. Hollin took these photos during his trip to Wilkes Station in the summers of 1958 and 1959 right before the station was handed over to the Austrailians for their ongoing research. Dr. Hollin is currently a Research Scientist Emeritus of the University of Colorado and a Fellow Emeritus at the INSTAAR. These images were scanned from his collection of 35 mm slides and his description of the photographs has also been transferred to the image records.
