Welcome to the glims_algor mailing list!  Please read and save this message, as
it contains important information.

PURPOSE

  The glims_algor mailing list is a communication forum for the algorithms
  (glacier boundaries and motion) working group in the GLIMS (Global Land Ice
  Measurements from Space) project.  See the DRAFT CHARTER for the working
  group below.

DESIGN OF LIST

  This list is "closed", meaning that subscription to the list requires the
  approval of the list owner.

  This list is "unmoderated", meaning that any subscriber can send messages
  directly to the list without them being filtered by a human.

  This list is "private", meaning that non-subscribers cannot post messages
  to the list.

TO SUBSCRIBE

  Send a message to majordomo at flagmail.wr.usgs.gov with the line

      subscribe glims_algor your at email.address

  in the *body* of the message.  The request will be forwarded to the list
  owner for approval.  Upon approval, you will be sent a welcome message,
  which includes this information.

TO UNSUBSCRIBE

  Send mail to majordomo at flagmail.wr.usgs.gov with the following command
  in the body of your email message:

DRAFT CHARTER OF THE GLIMS ALGORITHMS WORKING GROUP

  Identify practical algorithms for mapping the boundaries, boundary
  displacement, and surface motion of land ice from satellite observations.
  Develop distributable software packages (possibly including use of affordable
  commercial software) implementing the most successful algorithms.

  Boundaries and Motion Subgroup 1.  Edge locations of land ice using
  satellite optical imaging

  Goal:  Automated mapping of the terminus and lateral edge location of:
   - clean ice-rock boundaries to pixel resolution
   - debris-mantled ice to a few pixels (difficult goal)
   - ice-snow boundaries to a few pixels.

  Boundaries and Motion Subgroup 2: Image comparison and motion of ice using
  optical sensors

  Goal:  Determination of topography using (along-track) stereo imaging and
  determination of ice or debris-mantled surface motion using time-separated
  imaging.
