AGDC Releases WAIS Divide Ice Core Vertical Thin Section Low-resolution Digital Imagery

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, WAIS Divide Ice Core Vertical Thin Section Low-resolution Digital Imagery. This data set consists of a comprehensive, frame-stitched low‐resolution set of digital images of vertical thin sections of the main core (WDC 06A) from WAIS Divide.

AGDC Releases Grain Size Full Population Dataset from WDC06A Core

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Grain Size Full Population Dataset from WDC06A Core. This data set contains the complete grain-size data for all analyses conducted on the vertical thin sections of the WAIS Divide Ice Core WDC06A. Complete grain-size distributions are provided here in order to address the shortcomings inherent in using only the mean values.

AGDC Releases King George and Livingston Islands: Velocities and Digital Elevation Model

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, King George and Livingston Islands: Velocities and Digital Elevation Model. The data contain the time series totals of SAR derived detrended surface velocities from Livingston Island, as well as GeoTiff files generated from intensity tracking of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery.

AGDC Releases Ultra-trace Measurements in the WAIS Divide 06A Ice Core

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Ultra-trace Measurements in the WAIS Divide 06A Ice Core. These data contain the results of gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of 207 samples from the WAIS Divide 06A ice core. The trace gases found in the 207 samples are ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), n-butane (n-C4H10), carbonyl sulfide (COS), carbon disulfide (CS2), methyl chloride (CH3Cl), and methyl bromide (CH3Br).

AGDC Releases Ice Sheet Model Output, West Antarctic Ice Sheet Deglaciation

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Ice Sheet Model Output, West Antarctic Ice Sheet Deglaciation. This data set consists of Ice-sheet model output of Antarctic Ice Sheet simulations spanning 30,000 years BP to 5000+ years in the future.

 

AGDC Releases Mount Moulton Isotopes and Other Ice Core Data

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Mount Moulton Isotopes and Other Ice Core Data. These data consist of water isotope ratios from the Mt. Moulton ice-trench record, as well as data from the Taylor Dome, EPICA Dome C, Talos Dome, Vostok, and EPICA Dronning Maud Land ice cores.

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Ultra-High Resolution LA-ICP-MS Results: DO-21 Rapid Warming Event. These data contain the results of Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) performed on an archive of the GISP2 ice core containing the rapid climate warming of Dansgaard-Oeschger Event 21.

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, LA-ICP-MS Results: 3 Siple Dome A Glacial Age Archives. These data contain the results of Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) performed on an archive of the Siple Dome A ice core containing the rapid climate warming of Dansgaard-Oeschger Event 21.

AGDC Releases Low-res d15N and d18O of O2 in the WAIS Divide 06A Deep Core Data Set

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Low-res d15N and d18O of O2 in the WAIS Divide 06A Deep Core. This data set is a low-resolution set of measurements of d15N of N2 and d18O of O2, along with dO2/N and dAr/N2 supporting data, in the WAIS Divide 3405 m long ice core recovered in 2011.

AGDC Releases Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution Ice Core ICP-MS Data

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution Ice Core ICP-MS Data. This data set includes three Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) ice core samples drilled on Roosevelt Island, Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The RICE elements analyzed were: Sr, Cd, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Pb, Bi, U, As, Li, I, Al, S, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Na, Mg, Cu, Zn, and K verses depth.

This data set is a time series of borehole temperatures at different depths from three thermistor strings deployed in three boreholes drilled through the Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, Antarctica.

AGDC Releases Continuous, Ultra-high Resolution WAIS-Divide Ice Core Methane Record 9.8-67.2 ka BP

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Continuous, Ultra-high Resolution WAIS-Divide Ice Core Methane Record 9.8-67.2 ka BP.  This data set contains methane concentrations for the Last Glacial Period and the deglacial transition from the WAID Divide ice core. The concentrations were determined through a continuous measurement technique (Stowasser, et al. 2012).

This data set includes ~50 m averaged annual layer thicknesses down to 3403 m depth at the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide ice core as observed visually using diffuse transmitted light opposite a planed surface in a light-shielded booth in the core-processing line at the National Ice Core Lab in Denver, CO.

This data set contains the VSMOW-SLAP d17O, d18O, and 17O-excess data from the WAIS Divide Ice Core Project, Siple Dome and Taylor Dome, along with the published and VSMOW-SLAP normalized d17O, d18O, and 17O-excess for Vostok [Landais et al. 2008], EPICA Dome C and Talos Dome [Winkler et al., 2012]. The data set includes methyl bromide (CH3Br) measurements made on air extracted from 70 samples from the Taylor Dome M3C1 ice core. CH3Br was measured in air from the Taylor Dome ice core to reconstruct an atmospheric record for the Holocene (11-0 kyr B.P.) and part of the last glacial period (50-30 kyr B.P.).

This data set includes methyl chloride (CH3CI) measurements made on air extracted from 62 samples from the Taylor Dome M3C1 ice core in East Antarctica. CH3CI was measured in air from the Taylor Dome ice core to reconstruct an atmospheric record for the Holocene (11-0 kyr B.P.) and part of the last glacial period (50-30 kyr B.P.).

AGDC Releases WAIS Divide Sonic Log Data

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, WAIS Divide Sonic Log Data . This data set contains a record of speeds for vertically-propagating compression-waves measured throughout the depth of ice that surrounds the WAIS-D borehole. Multiple logs provide redundant measurements for all depths. Data for individual wave-speed measurements were included, as well as 3 m running averages for each log. A Takeaway Profile that represents our interpretation of the combined data set is also included.

AGDC Releases Iceberg Capsize Kinematics and Energetics Data

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Iceberg Capsize Kinematics and Energetics. This data set represents a typical single iceberg capsize experiment. Included in this data set are all the parameters of the plastic iceberg’s density and dimensions, the density of the water surrounding the iceberg, and the value of gravitational acceleration. The timeseries data consists of all the kinematic and energetic variables as a function of time for the iceberg capsize experiment.

AGDC Releases Bubble Number-density Data and Modeled Paleoclimates Data

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Bubble Number-density Data and Modeled Paleoclimates. This data set includes bubble number-density measured at depths from 120 meters to 560 meters at 20-meter intervals in both horizontal and vertical samples. The data set also includes modeled temperature reconstructions based on the model developed by Spencer et al. (2006).

Version 1.1 of the MODIS Mosaic of Antarctica 2003-2004 (MOA2004) Image Map Now Available

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of Version 1.1 of the MODIS Mosaic of Antarctica 2003-2004 Image Map. In version 1.1, the original grain size image file, moa750_r1_nds.img.gz, was replaced with several new grain size image files with better resolution, and file names were changed to reflect the year for the data acquisition.

The MOA2004 Image Map consists of two cloud-free digital image maps that show mean surface morphology and a quantatative measure of optical snow grain size on the Antarctic continent and surrounding islands using 260 orbit swaths from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments on board the NASA EOS Aqua and Terra satellites.

AGDC Releases High-resolution Atmospheric CO2 Data

This data set provides a new CO2 record from the Siple Dome ice core, Antarctica, that covers 7.4-9.0 ka (thousand years) with 8- to 16-year resolution.

AGDC Releases Temperature Profile Data

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Temperature Profile of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet Divide Deep Borehole. This data set reports depth versus temperatures in the fluid-filled portion of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet Divide (WAIS–D) deep borehole (70 to 3328 meters depth). Data were acquired on December 5, 2011 and have been post-processed to convert resistance to temperature.

AGDC Releases Lake Geometry and Derived Depth Data

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Standing Water Depth on Larsen B Ice Shelf. This data set addresses why surface melt water lakes on ice shelves and ice sheets are notably influential in triggering ice-shelf break-up and modulating seasonal ice flow, and are thus principle avenues by which environmental change can be transmitted to the ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland. A comparative analysis is performed of lake geometry and derived depth (using Landsat image reflectance) in two distinct regions, one a collapsing ice shelf and the other an ablation zone of a land terminating ice sheet, to better characterize the range of surface lake variability.

This data set consists of data from optical logs made at the WAIS Divide with a laser dust logger in clear ice at depths between 1403.58 meters and 3329.8 meters.

AGDC Releases Numerical Model Data

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of a new data set, Interaction of Ice Stream Flow with Heterogeneous Beds. This data set consists of outputs of several numerical models simulating ice stream flow over undulated bed, interaction of ice stream flow, and subglacial and supraglacial hydraulic systems. All simulations are performed for idealized geometries using finite-element models.

US International Trans Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US ITASE) Glaciochemical Data, Version 2 Data Set Released

This data set contains sub-annually resolved ice core chemistry data from various sites on the Antarctic Ice Sheet during the US International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US ITASE) deployments. Researchers conducted experiments approximately every 30 – 300 km looking for clues representing climatic conditions over the past 200-1000+ years. Ice cores obtained for the glaciochemical component of the US ITASE research were analyzed for soluble major ion content and in some cases trace elements. Extreme events, such as volcanic eruptions, provide absolute age horizons within each core that are easily identified in chemical profiles. The chemical analysis is also useful for quantifying anthropogenic impact, biogeochemical cycling, and for reconstructing past atmospheric circulation patterns.

Temperature of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet Data Set Released

This data set contains temperature-depth profile measurements taken in 22 boreholes drilled on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which exhibit two distinctly different thermal states of basal ice: a warm state and a relatively colder state.

Depths to Ice-cemented Soils in High-elevation Quartermain Mountains, Dry Valleys, Antarctica Data Set Released

This data set is comprised of four surveyed valleys focusing on the depth to ground ice in the high-elevation Quartermain Mountains in the Beacon Valley area: University Valley, Farnell Valley, and two unnamed valleys north of University Valley, which we will call Valley North and Valley 2 North. To date it is only in the high-elevation Dry Valleys that the climatic conditions are dry and cold enough that cryotic (always below 0°C) yet dry soil is found over ice-cemented ground (McKay et al. 1998); (Bockheim 2007). The data provide a qualitative and quantitative contribution towards understanding the type and distribution of ground ice in the Quartermain Mountains at a high spatial resolution. The measurements can be used to improve and validate models of ice stability and distribution. This data set contains observations of depth to ice-cemented ground, based on 475 measurements at 147 sites. Note that the measurements represent the thickness of the active layer plus any dry permafrost layer, which is ubiquitous in this region, and not just the thickness of the active layer.

Videos of Basal Ice in Boreholes on the Kamb Ice Stream in West Antarctica Data Set Released

This data set is a collection of video data of basal ice taken in a borehole on the Kamb Ice Stream in West Antarctica. Ice streams are an expression of the inherent instability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, and their behavior is a key control on the overall ice-sheet mass balance. Understanding the response of the ice sheet in a warming climate requires a thorough understanding of the internal dynamics of ice streams, in addition to the relevant ice-atmosphere and ice-ocean interactions in the region. The basal environment of the ice streams and of many glaciers is a key scientific interest, including conditions, mainly basal sliding, that lead to fast flow of the ice. The purpose of this data set is to present a review of the full range of original video recordings from the basal ice of the Kamb Ice Stream. Direct observations at the ice-stream bed are a crucial complement to modeling efforts predicting future scenarios in a warming climate.

Thwaites International Polar Year (IPY) Geophysics, Antarctica Data Set Released

Siple Dome A (SDMA) Grain Orientation 640 – 790 Meters Data Set Released

This data set characterizes the microstructure in ice cores, in particular the microstructural locations of impurities, grain orientations, and strain gradients. The fabric of polycrystalline ice is typically described using only the c-axis orientation, but this is insufficient for a full description of grain orientations in this hexagonal material. This data set contains lake boundaries, volume changes, and gridded elevations for 124 active subglacial lakes beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. Lakes were identified using laser altimetry data obtained from 2003 to 2009 by NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) mission.

Coastal and Terminus History of the Eastern Amundsen Sea Embayment, West Antarctica Data Set Released

This data set provides a coastline history of the eastern Amundsen Sea Embayment and terminus histories of its outlet glaciers derived from those coastlines. These outlet glaciers include Smith, Haynes, Thwaites, and Pine Island Glaciers. The coastlines were derived from detailed tracing of Landsat imagery between late 1972 and late 2011 (at a scale of 1:50,000). The data set also uses some additional data from other sources. The terminus histories are calculated as the intersections between these coastlines and 1996 flowlines.

The Antarctic Glaciological Data Center (AGDC) at NSIDC has published the ASTER GDEM 100-m Digital Elevation Model of the Antarctic Peninsula. The data set provides a 100-meter resolution surface topography Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the Antarctic Peninsula. The DEM is based on Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM) Version 1 data.
