Detailed Data Description

This data set contains the results of Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) performed on an archive of the Siple Dome A ice core containing the rapid climate warming of Dansgaard-Oeschger Event 21. The data are total concentrations of sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and iron (Fe), given in counts per second (cps) and parts per billion (ppb). See Figure 1 for an example of the annual layers of the three concentrations.

Annual Layers

Format

Data are in Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) format.

File and Directory Structure

Data are available on the FTP site in the ftp://sidads.colorado.edu/pub/DATASETS/AGDC/nsidc0636_mayewski directory. Within this directory, there is one file: SDMA_glacialLAICPMS_rawdata.xlsx. The worksheet contains ten columns. See Table 1 for a description of the data in each column.

Table 1. Data Field Descriptions
Data Field Description
Time (sec) Number of seconds from the start of the process when the sample was collected. The ICP-MS collects one sample every 0.25 seconds
Columns 2-7 There are two columns for each element: one with the number of counts per sdecond (cps) in each sample and one with the calulated laser ablation parts per billion (ppb)
Depth (m) Depth along the ice core where the sample was collected

Data Acquisition and Processing

Data Acquisition Methods

The SDMA ice archive sections used in this study are ~ 3 x 3 cm rods. Prior to analysis, the surface of the ice is scraped. The sample is then transferred into the Sayre CellTM for analysis.

Sensor or Instrument Description

The instrument used is the W.M. Keck Laser Ice Core Facility's LA-ICP- MS system for the ultra-high resolution glaciochemical analyses. Components include a Thermo Element 2 ICP-MS coupled to a New Wave UP-213 laser system and the Sayre CellTM, a cryocell chamber designed to seal a 1 m ice core from the surrounding air, while maintaining a uniform temperature of ~15° C and a 121 µm sampling resolution.
