NSIDC is one of hundreds of international organizations that are participating in the International Polar Year (IPY). During IPY, thousands of interdisciplinary researchers from more than sixty countries will dedicate themselves to the study of the polar regions and other frozen areas of our planet.

The World Meteorological Organization and the International Council for Science sponsored IPY to run from March 1, 2007, through March of 2009 so that researchers will have the opportunity to study the two polar regions during both winter and summer.

The official United States launch of the International Polar Year takes place on February 26, 2007. The official international IPY launch will be in Paris on March 1, 2007, with an opening ceremony and press conference. To learn about all of the launch events surrounding IPY, as well as the experts who will be speaking, visit the International Polar Year launch page at http://www.ipy.org/index.php?/ipy/detail/launch/.
