Collection Casting is a process that helps you advertise your data sets or collections. With Collection Casting, data providers can help users and computers on the internet discover your data quickly and more efficiently. Collection Casting uses Atom technology. This means that your Collection Cast or feed can be viewed with any desktop or browser-based feed reader.
You can use ATOM feeds so people and computer systems can find your data quickly and easily. For that purpose, NSIDC and the Libre project have created the Collection Caster, a Web-based tool that helps you create ATOM feeds.
How to Create a Collection Cast
Launch the Collection Caster tool and create the XML file (ATOM Feed).
Save the XML file to a hard disk.
Place the XML file on a publicly accessible Web server.
On one of your Web pages, create a link that points to the XML file.
That's all! Now you have a Collection Cast feed that will advertise your data. For more information on how to use ATOM feeds, visit the AtomEnabled Web site.
Additionally, if you want to share the rights of your data collection with the world, consider using the PIC Badging tool.
Once you have published your collection cast, you need to promote it so others know that it is available and how you want it shared. One way of promoting the collection cast will happen automatically. That is, if your Web server allows the search engines' bots to index all or parts of your site, the search engines will be able to index that content and make it searchable. The other way to promote your new collection cast is manually, through the use of social networks, e-mail services, news wire services, and other methods.
